Back Forty Texas BBQ is the place to be if you are in dire need of iron and/or iron supplements. Even Socrates (and Plato to some extent) was a firm believer in stuffing one’s abdominal region with “planks of beef” and “legions of pork” so as to create sustenance of the highest order including daily needs for iron. The result of this imbibing will bring about the vim and vigor of your youth! Who would not want that? (rhetorical question) So come by BFTB and eat, drink and listen… LUMBERYARD brings it’s “thang” to Ferry St Station in lovely Martinez. It’s an early gig, 5-8, so you can still make it home at a decent hour. (later would, of course, be indecent) This week we have Tom “FOF” Fleming on guitar, Dave “BassMan” McCullough on bass, Alan “Big Bucks” Thiele on drums and Dan “Chop Shop” DeShara on guitar. Be a friend of LUMBERYARD! http://www.facebook.com/pages/LUMBERYARD/370300136152 Until then, Dan Saturday 3/20/10 Dan at Back Forty Texas BBQ 6-10 pm Sunday 3/21/10 LBY at Ferry ST Station in Martinez 5-8 pm 600 Ferry St, Martinez, CA ALSO: LUMBERYARD at The Vibe in Club 101 in San Rafael April 2, Friday night! 9-1pm Happy Hour 8-10:30 $10 cover. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=414400428227&ref=mf |

I will be at Rocco’s unless I break a leg/hip/neck snowboarding Thursday at Sierra Ski. While nothing has been broken yet a young, wet behind the ears boardin’ dude slammed into me last time and I landed face down in the slush. At first I thought to myself “I think I can walk but what will my friends say about my now crushed right eye socket?” It turned out not to be damaged but there were frozen tears related to my crying tantrum and possible detached retina. Channing picked me up and dusted me off as I limped downhill to the BBQ beef schnitzel. Wish me luck Thursday and hope to see you at Rocco’s. Until then, Dan PS LUMBERYARD plays March 21, Sunday from 5-8pm at Ferry St Station in Martinez and April 2, Friday at The Vibe in Marin 9-1pm (just across the San Rafael Bridge) Saturday March 13, Rocco’s Pizzeria in Walnut Creek 8:30-11 |

I return to Back 40 Texas BBQ this Saturday. It’s important to differentiate between “Texas” BBQ and, let’s say, “Inuit Eskimo” BBQ. Texan beef and beef by-products retain the smoky BBQ flavor they are imbibed with whereas walrus and seal actually REPEL this ancient tradition of seasoning. The point I am getting at is to NOT order the suitably named “I Am The Walrus” combo plate (made me gag) and stick to the tried and true “Sirloin Shank on a Spit” ala carte selection. Of course Garlic Mashed Potatoes completes this dish for a fine and memorable dining experience. Only at Back 40 Texas BBQ! PS Thanks to those of you that braved the Bay Bridge to show up at Beale St Bar. LUMBERYARD appreciates you and is always thinking of you and your immediate family… Until then, Dan Saturday 2/27/10 Back Forty Texas BBQ in Pleasant Hill (close to Best Buy) 6-10 pm |

OK, so the Beale St gig in SF was an almost complete disaster with the exception of a few friends/fans who made their way through the torrential rain. Even the City friends were a no show… We will try again the 18th but I guess the world is a different place than it was back when people supported live music. LUMBERYARD is a decent band with decent players so what could it be? Fear of rain on a school night? The City is too scary? Crappy club in a crappy location? No accountability from those who said they would show up and then bailed? Dan, it’s a cruel world out there so you had better toughen up! Until then….. PS Happy Valentines Day! Saturday 2/13/10 at Rocco’s Pizzeria 8:30-11pm |

Hey ya'll (I was born in New Orleans so this is not just some Britney Spears affectation) Hope to see ya'll Thursday at Beale St Bar in SF with LUMBERYARD. Tom Fleming, Tommy Miller, Jim Bogios and Dan (me) Lot's of special guests sitting in and we need to make a decent showing of our fans so we can reap the rewards of long years spent wood shedding. 8-11pm 133 Beale ST, SF 94105 PLUS Dan’s 1968 Les Paul Goldtop reappears with new paint! See it to believe it! PLUS ALSO: Dan returns to Back 40 BBQ Saturday from 6-10 Until then, Dan Thursday 2/4/10 Beale St Bar and Grill w/LUMBERYARD 8-11 pm Saturday 2/6/10 Back 40 BBQ in Walnut Creek 6-10 |

Dan returns to Rocco’s with his trusty, yet rusty, red 1976 Guild D25 acoustic guitar. This guitar, to the exclusion of all other guitars, has been steeped in mothballs since Dan’s 1965 Gibson LGO acoustic showed up on the scene. But let’s face it: Dan needs all the help he can get and the Guild DOES sound better. So Rocco’s walls will be reverberatin’ this Saturday amongst the pizza pies. Plus anyone who showed up at my aborted “on again/off again” gig at Back 40 BBQ last Saturday drinks for free! (tax not included) ALSO: LUMBERYARD plays Beale St Grill in SF Thursday FEB 4th from 8-11. It’s our first foray into the big, scary void we know as “The City”. Do they have places to park there? Will we be overcome by those damn “liberal” peace pacifists? Can I wear my favorite pair of “Dockers Brand” slacks? Will any of our East Bay fans make the trek due West? These questions and more will be answered post engagement… Until then, Dan Sat January 30 Rocco’s Pizzeria 8:30-11ish Thur February 4 Beale St Bar and Grill in SF 8-11 LUMBERYARD = Tommy Miller/bass, Dan DeShara/guitar, Tom Fleming/guitar, Jim Bogios/drums plus special guests… |

Fresh from the Peterson’s Sonoma Christmas Party last Saturday with LUMBERYARD, Dan is ready to switch gears back to the lonely acoustic guitar. Oh sure it’s nice to have fans genuflecting in front of you as your 20 bar solo is reaching it’s maximum ethereal height but nothing is more organic than a box made of wood with strings attached to it. It harkens back to the solitary hunter staring at the wall of his cave. “How can I best express myself?” he ponders. Then he hears a sound…a dark, unwelcome figure enters through the low cave door (the “unwelcome” part is important to the story as is the low cave door)… instinctively the caveman hurls a piece of firewood toward the approaching intruder striking him/her/it upon him/her/it’s protruding simian brow. A lovely, musical tone is emitted from the wooden projectile followed by a shriek and hasty exit from the, again, unwelcome guest. The wooden tone strikes a chord (pun intended) and the caveman returns to pondering but now to the accompaniment of his hunk of wood which, as evolution has proven, has slowly transmogrified into the current day drum and/or guitar instrument. So come on down as I play in front of the fireplace with my wooden box… Until then, Dan Saturday Back Forty Texas in Pleasant Hill BBQ 6-10pm |

Dan returns to Rocco’s Pizzeria with all kinds of Holiday music. For instance, in addition to “I’ll Have a Blue Christmas” and “Jingle Bells”, there will be songs like “Bringin’ Sexy Back” and “Shake What Your Momma Gave You” plus the Seasonal favorite “My Humps.” I have retained rights to exclusively perform these songs this Holiday Season which means, of course, that you can hear them no where else but by me! Aaahhh, The Holidays…. Sat 12/05/09 Roccos’ Pizzeria at Ygnacio and Oak Grove in Walnut Creek. 8:30-10ish PS LUMBERYARD’s New Years gig has fallen through so pass the word if any one needs a band for a New Years party….(of course you will get a finders fee, natch) |

First of all I must say how THANKFUL I am for having people come and see me sing and play music. I’m blessed to have such good people around me. Seriously...I’m not kidding….this is the real deal… NOW: Bring all those relatives from out of town and show them what REAL TEXAS BBQ is all about! They could be thanking you for the next ten years. They would be thankful to a fault… It would remind them what Turkey Day is all about: Being thankful. Until then, Dan 11/28-09 Saturday Back Forty Texas BBQ in Pleasant Hill 6-10 pm |

First off, there’s a costume contest with millions of dollars in cash, prizes and coupons. I will probably be a crustacean of some sort, maybe a shell fish. No one does shell fish so why not stretch the artistic envelope? I will probably be a frozen one as salt water is unwelcome in an electrical environment. (amps, lights, etc) Mostly though I will go for the smell of fresh shell fish as opposed to the “week old - left on the counter” type of odor. Some people find it offensive. But then again some people watch “Extreme Cage Fighting” so it takes all types. After Back 40 you should cruise over to Dallimonti’s to see “The Famous Three-O”. They are appearing as Hof Brau Leftovers. Meat, potatoes, turnips, gravy, chicken broth, etc. Bring your galoshes as they do not adhere to the aforementioned electrical environment rules. It could be a shocking Halloween! ha ha lol Until then, Dan Thursday 10/30/09 Thought is was Wednesday and failed to show up for my Kinders gig. Took me 3 hours to get home from SF after a 13 hour work day to find a message on my phone in the manner of “where are you Mr Idiot?” Luckily they pulled in a Farmers Market music performer to fill in. My face is still red..like a shell fish. Saturday 10/31/09 Back 40 Texas BBQ in Pleasant Hill 6-10 pm |

Hello fans, I usually don’t send this sort of thing out but found this particular missive interesting and though provoking. See you October 31st (Halloween or All Saints Day) at Back 40 BBQ 6-10 On her radio show, Dr Laura Schlesinger said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following response is an open letter to Dr. Laura, penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative: Dear Dr. Laura: Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination... End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them. 1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians? 2. I would like to sell my daughter-in-law into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her? 3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense. 4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is, my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them? 5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath.Exodus 35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it? 6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination? 7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle- room here? 8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die? 9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves? 10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14) I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging. Your adoring fan. James M. Kauffman, Ed.D. Professor Emeritus Dept. of Curriculum Instruction, and Special Education University of Virginia |

I made an “impassioned plea” last month for LUMBERYARD’S gig at Dallimonti’s and that didn’t work so well. So now I’m making an embarrassing impassioned plea for you to make a “concerted effort” to come out and support the band and live music at Dallimonti’s. If no one shows up then the bar sales are not there to pay the band and we don’t get rehired. (Thanks Dan, we were not aware of this very important fact!) Ron and Christie make Dallimonti’s one of the last few places to see/hear/feel live music in the area. Even though live music is a dying breed everywhere except SF, we need your support to keep going. (not unlike public radio) We have Tom “Fingers of Fiery Flame” Fleming and Donn Spindt on drums. Plus all those special guests who show up to surprise you, the supporting audience. Tell all your friends! This is LUMBERYARD’S last public appearance for 2009… Until then! Saturday 10/10/09 LUMBERYARD at Dallimonti’s in Pleasant Hill 9:30-1:00ish (1932 Oak Park Blvd at Putnam) |

Last weekend went off without a hitch! My Saturday morning gig with Kean went especially well and the Martinez “crowd” (eight people) were hard pressed to refuse our leaving the stage. (what?) I stole away to fulfill my duties with The Shillz at the Walnut Festival and played to seven people there. Rocco’s was a blast with Channing Dahl, Kean Butterfield and an ultra rare appearance by guitarist Jinx Jones. He played up storm and then combed his hair and left the stage. What a pro! I fill in for Ken Copper this Friday (even though his emailer didn’t say so…) at Back Forty BBQ from 6-10ish. I have been booked at Rocco’s as well Saturday night so I’m hoping to see Frankie and his gang at one of these shows. I’ll be stopping afterwards at Dallimonti’s on Saturday to say hello to Cover2Cover and plug LUMBERYARD’S gig there on October 10th. Until then! Friday Back 40 BBQ in Pleasant Hill 6-10ish Saturday Rocco’s Pizzeria in Walnut Creek 8:30-11ish (place magnet here) lol Cover2Coverish |

How does a guy get into such a fine mess as this? Now try and follow along as I can say this only once. Saturday morning I play with Kean Butterfield in Martinez on Court and Main from 10:30-12:30 and then I’m off to the Walnut Festival at Heather Farms to sit in with The Shillz from 2:30 -3:30. I rush home for a quick shower with my new “all over body loofah” (sic) and then a long nap until I awaken and hightail it down to Rocco’s Pizzeria from 8:30 -11ish. Sunday morning I wake up (again) and drive back to Martinez to lead LUMBERYARD through a two hour set from 12:30-2:30. Special guests will be Paul Cotruvo, Donn Spindt, Channing Dahl and the great Kean Butterfield. There’s plenty to choose from so Dan hopes to see you somewhere this weekend… Until then! Sat 9/26 Martinez at Court and Main 10:30-12:30 Walnut Creek Festival 2:30 -3:30 Rocco’s Pizzeria 8:30 -11ish Sun 9/27 Martinez at Court and Main 12:30-2:30 PS Saw Cole Panther (Robert Siedler) as elevator guy on Mad Men last night! |

Thanks Buzztone fans for making our “Concert in the Park” a success. We saw some great friends who traveled many miles (6000 in one case, Margaret!) to see us. The Piffs were there from Austin, TX and also some friends from Walnut Creek, CA. We hope to do it again soon! Saturday Dan plays Back 40 BBQ in Pleasant Hill across the street from Best Buy and not to far from BART (6-10pm) Until then, Dan |

The time is nigh! The Buzztones complete their “Wide Stance” tour this Sunday. There is a buzz around town and it seems not to be what songs we will choose but rather what lower garment Dave “Crazy Pants” Martin will wear. His Lafayette choice distracted from the Buzztones sound as more people looked than listened. Since Ken, Dan and Alan have no pull or influence over Dave’s decision it’s anybody guess what will be pulled out of the wardrobe trunk he carries at all times. (in his car of course) Channing Dahl will make a special appearance with a spritzer bottle so keep the cameras on standby. ALSO: Bring lots of money as the Original Buzztones record will be for sale. You can listen to it at your grandparent’s house on their “record player” of use it as a seat cushion to protect your pantalones from the freshly mowed lawn. It’s your choice… Sunday 8/30/09 The Buzztones at Pleasant Hill City Hall Park (Gregory and Cleveland) 6-8 pm |

Dan returns to Kinders in Benicia. Is the name Kinders a derivative of the German word they use for children? Kindergarten (literally means "children's garden") is a school for kids. If this is so, and the facts say it is, would Kinders be “meat and meat by products for children”? I’ve been pondering this for quite some time. As an uncle to many nieces and nephews I’m not sure it’s the best nutritional idea to have a store dedicated to selling meat and only meat to our youngsters. And why the Sippy Cups on the menu filled with gravy and/or BBQ sauce? This could be the main cause for the nationwide epidemic of obesity in children. (plump little Kinder) I find this appalling and will speak with Jeff, the owner, AFTER I get paid tonight. In the meantime bring the KIDS for the fun on the outside patio after you visit the Farmers Market. ALSO: This Saturday at Dallimonti’s will be a first for LUMBERYARD. We will be a three piece with Donn Spindt on drums, Tom FOF Fleming on rhythm and lead guitar, (he has to do both) and Dan on bass. Plenty of room for “sit in” friends and the like. Sort of like “The Famous Threeo”… Until then, Dan Thursday 7/30/09 Kinders 560 1st St; Benicia, CA 94510 6-9pm Saturday 8/01/09 Dallimonti’s in Pleasant Hill with LUMBERYARD 9:30-1ish |

To appear and sound redundant, Dan is back at Back Forty BBQ! I’m bring in the 18” stereo sub-woofer to bring out the lows that occur naturally and organically plus inherently in my vocal range. Prepare to be shaken, not stirred. The blue tape is long gone from my finger but I will (and have) shown the scar for one dollar per look/glance. It’s fairly hideous and one 6 year old girl (of course it was a GIRL!) had a brief faintly spell and then recovered enough to have her picture taken while touching it. It’s on her grade school version of Facebook or so I’m told. PS Thanks to those who broke away from their wide screen HD TVs thus making their way out to Dallimonti’s. We’ll be back August 1st. Saturday July 26 Back Forty BBQ in Walnut Creek 6-10 Until then, Dan |

Show some support for LIVE music this Saturday at Dallimonti's with LUMBERYARD As of late, most club owners are concerned about attendance for their live music programs. They are doing the “right thing” by supporting a seemingly dying cause: music being played by live musicians. There used to be tons of places to see live music but these days people mostly stay home to enjoy their humongous entertainment centers and drink Napa Valley wine coolers. And so I am sending out an impassioned plea for you to come out and see LUMBERYARD and let Ron and Christie Dallimonti know you appreciate the fact they have a venue for musicians to play in. If that’s not enough incentive, we have Tom Fleming, Matt Tidmarsh and Alan Thiele plus me, Dan DeShara, laying down some fine classic hits for your listening and dancing enjoyment. Until then, Dan Saturday 7/18/09 Dallimonti’s in Pleasant Hill with LUMBERYARD 9:30-1ish |

Things are looking up as Dan returns to the Back Forty BBQ. The manager (owner?) Jeff said that after a mangers meeting the comments about Dan’s previous Saturday nights ran from “He’s not to bad” on up to “Thank God he had Paul and Toni from high energy rock band “Cover To Cover” in to help him out!” Worthy praise indeed… IN A NON-RELATED INCIDENT After cutting his thumb in a work related incident, Dan has taken to wearing blue “low tack” painters tape on his opposable right thumb. “Stitches are for girls” was Dan’s profound statement as he wound the bright primary color around his digit. Will it affect his prodigious guitar prowess like the infamous fractured middle left finger of summer 2007? And what about his newly acquired Nashville finger picking style? Come down to see… PS After Back Forty Dan is off to the “Stef Burns 50th Birthday Party”. Who would have thought Stef would look so young at this mid-century mark. After a few Tequila poppers I will find out who does his collagen and Botox. Maybe it’s just the yoga…and healthy tofu and sprouted wheat grass sandwiches… Until then, Dan Saturday Back Forty BBQ in Walnut Creek 5-9 (note earlier time) pm (of course) |

Dan brings his “Ralston Purina Chow” sponsored show to Back Forty this Saturday. There will be will be swizzle sticks in the shapes of dog tails and cat femur bones and prehensile monkey tails. (Monkey Chow!) Ever since the economy took a downturn Dan has been searching for the perfectly synergistic combination of product endorsement for his “off the hook” live shows and Purina was a “no brainer”. There will also be many off color jokes and asides concerning animals mating habits and habitats. LOL! (Romanian word for cat is 'pisika') Until then, Dan Saturday 6/27 Back Forty BBQ in Walnut Creek 6-10pm ALSO LUMBERYARD returns to Dallimonti’s July 18th ! |

The Buzztones Reunite! It’s quite the weekend for music, not unlike “The Perfect Storm” except no boats/huge-fish-hook-in-the-hand and/or bad weather. If you were around in the 80s and want to relive seeing/hearing The Buzztones play music then this Friday might be your cup of herbal tea. We had one rehearsal and are ready to help you bring back fond memories of those shots of “Johnny Seven Death Commandoes”. It’s outside in Lafayette Friday at 5:30-8 so come on by and have your picture taken with Ken Cooper… Then we have LUMBERYARD this Sunday playing Walnut Creek’s 28th Annual Art and Wine Festival. We go on at 12 noon for an hour so come early and stay late. Bring the kids! LUMBERYARD has a crazy lineup this time. Dan "Chop Shop" DeShara guitar/vocals, Kean "Fine Clothing and Hats" Butterfield harp/vocals, Tom "Fingers of Flame" Fleming guitar/vocals, Matt "Too Dang Tall" Tidmarsh standup bass/vocals, Jim "Mad Dawg" Bogios drums/vocals. Plus Channing "Kobe Fan" Dahl! Maybe some sit in guests….Bring your camera! http://www.walnut-creek.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=57:art-a-wine-festival&catid=14:upcoming-events&Itemid=89 ALSO: If you missed it there was an article in Sundays SF Chronicle about Dan’s 65 Ford Falcon: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/05/31/MTC417TFG8.DTL Until then, Dan Friday 6/5 The Buzztones in Lafayette 5:30-8 in the Town Square (see enclosed poster) Sunday 6/7 LUMBERYARD at Walnut Creek’s 28th Annual Art and Wine Festival at Heather Farms 11:59 (basically noon) |

I’ve received tons of email concerning Rocco’s new curtains. As in, “Dan, why are you not utilizing the curtains you installed to improve the sound and scenery when you perform your incredible one man show at Rocco’s?” The answer is profoundly simple: I forgot about them! Even though they are right in front of me when I set up my gear. Since there is usually a line around the block when I play there and the room is so packed with music loving pizza eaters, perhaps the patrons were to busy and/or chewing to point out the curtains were yet to be unfurled. I am planning on stapling a note to my “Member’s Only” pleather jacket (with a P) alerting myself to the current curtain situation… Until then, Dan PS Paul Cotruvo will be sitting in for a set or two. Saturday 5/23/09 Rocco’s Pizzeria at Ygnacio and Oak Grove in Walnut Creek DON’T FORGET DEPARTMENT The Original/Genuine Buzztones play outside at the Lafayette Town Plaza on Friday, June 5th 5:30-7:30ish LUMBERYARD plays Walnut Creek Art and Wine June 7th 12 noon Tom Fleming/guitar Dan DeShara/guitar Matt Tidmarsh/dog house bass Michael Urbano/drums |

Come on by and have a side of beef. It’s good and priced in your favor. I had a full cow last time but washed it down with a diet soda so as not to put on the pounds. (I porked out in New Orleans so I have to be careful) Until then, Dan Saturday 5/16/09 Back Forty BBQ in Pleasant Hill 6-10 (pm) |
|
I’ll be in New Orleans this weekend celebrating someone’s birthday. Channing and I will be eating a lot of gumbo and shrimpy stuff. Not to mention playing dominoes with Aunt Millie until three AM. Maybe I’ll do a drive by of the freeway that goes over where my birth house was and is no more. We’ll bring our own basketball and shoot hoops with Darren Jr. and then drive out to Slidell and look up Uncle Benny and Aunt Mary. If they’re out we’ll turn around and drive back to Chalmette to see if Aunt Leona and Uncle Santo are in. If not, it’s back to Aunt Millie’s for macaroni made with spaghetti and NOT elbow macaroni. Only in New Orleans… This month LUMBERYARD features Alan Thiele back in rotation on drums. Been too long not to have Alan rotating on his kit. Joe Aspatore brings his rockin’ mojo and his new/vintage Fender Tremolux. Tommy Miller will show up with one of his Fender style bass guitars and NOT his fancy LED lit up Alembic! Dan brings his UGLY Blue Sunburst 1968 Les Paul which did not get stripped and repainted yet! What the HECK? PS LUMBERYARD plays June 7th at the WC Art & Wine Festival at noon. Until then, Dan 5/9/09 LUMBERYARD at Dallimonti’s 9:30-1ish (pm) (place magnet here) KC |

Ken is out and Dan is in this Friday night at Back 40 BBQ. It was a total gas last Saturday and the beer was flowing like wine all night long. I lit up the stone fireplace behind me like a roman candle with my ultra-cool-futuristic LED lights. Hopefully there will be more of the same this Friday as Ken Cooper takes another gig somewhere else. (private event no less!) Some of my favorite people may come out and sit in for some good ol’ tyme jammin’… Perhaps we will see you then. PS The Buzztones will be staging a reunion of sorts June 5th in Lafayette 5:30 to 7:30ish. It’s outdoors so bring the kids! Until then, Dan Friday 4/24/09 Back Forty BBQ in Walnut Creek solo acoustic 6-10ish (pm not am) (place magnet here) KC |
|
After LUMBERYARD’s uber-successful night at Dallimonti’s it will be nice to relax and play in the intimate atmosphere that is Back-Forty BBQ. When I visit the Uncontested Master, KC, on Fridays I start of with a large Guinness and then sit back and listen to KC’s high end PA system. Built with Old European tubes, Bakelite knobs and Mercury repro transformers, it has to be HEARD to be believed! I will bring my “all in one” unit to entertain the cognoscenti and sports fans who frequent Back–Forty. It’s an early night so come by and then follow me over to Masse’s to see Cover2Cover, the East Bays Highest Energy Band! Until then, Dan 4/18/09 Dan solo acoustic Back-Forty BBQ in Walnut Creek 6-10pm ALSO: Back-Forty BBQ next Friday the 24th… (place magnet here) KC

LUMBERYARD this Saturday at Dallimonti's 4/11/09 This Saturday we have a unique event. Since we have Matt Tidmarsh of Super Diamond and Spinout fame with us we seem to be morphing into a LUMBERYARD meets Spinout conundrum. Since this is the case, there will be lots of Rock-a-Billy/Johnny Cash/Beatles/Carpenters mish-mashing to look forward to. With Tom “Fingers of Flame” Fleming (also of Spinout) on board I foresee lots of cool, vintage gear showing up along with a refined sense of melodic, polyrhythmic placement of notes. Jim Bogios, just back from Australia, can actually make his drums carry on a conversation plus add and subtract simple integers. Who knew? Along with Matt bringing his “Gretsch Orange” standup bass, I will bring along my newly acquired 1968 Les Paul with a surprisingly ugly Blue Sunburst after market paint job. This will be the ONLY time to see it as it will be stripped and repainted in a fortnight. ALSO: Don’t forget the WEM Dominator 50 amplifier! Shades of Pink Floyd in Pompeii! So call your friends (Rusty Bindings!) and make your destination Dallimonti’s this Saturday. Until then, Dan 4/11/09 Dallimonti’s in Pleasant Hill w/LUMBERYARD 9:30-1ish (place magnet here) KC |

Hello all, As I watched Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” I could not help wondering why Rocco does not pronounce the world “pizzeria” like actor Danny Aiello. Rocco does the usual “E” sound whereas Danny (the actor) uses the “I” version so it sounds like “pits-er-ria”. I know Rocco has seen the movie and in fact owns a Criteria version DVD with all the trimmings. (director commentary, outtakes, goof reel, critical evaluations, ‘warm fuzzy’ ending version as opposed to ‘garbage can through the front window’ ending version.) So maybe we can get Rocco to do an on mic dissertation about West Coast vs East Coast dialects. (all local gangs are cordially uninvited) Nonetheless, Rocco’s has excellent “peetza” and nice curtains. (plus hanging Vespa) Until then, Dan Saturday 4/4/09 Rocco’s Pizzeria in WC at Ygnacio and Oak Grove 8:30-11ish UPCOMING: LUMBERYARD at Dallimonti’s 4/11 with “Big Bass Man” Matt Tidmarsh, Tom “Fingers of Flame” Fleming (not actually Flemish but rather Icelandic) and Jim Bogios on drums. Sort of like LUMBERYARD meets Spinout. I will be back with a new/old 1968 Les Paul (small headstock) and my recently reacquired WEM Dominator 50 “Pink Floyd” amp. Be prepared for the unusual sunburst paint job on Les Paul: powder blue! Dan solo at Back Forty BBQ 4/18 and 4/24. (place magnet here) |

There was some confusion with last week’s missive concerning LUMBERYARD at Rocco’s. I talked about LUMBERYARD’s new budget basement “world wide inter webs” site so it would stand to reason that even though it said Dan would be at Rocco’s some (no names please!) would assume it would be LUMBERYARD and not just Dan. Alas, it was just Dan and Dan takes the blame for this breach in the performer/fan bond. Before we called “it” LUMBERYARD there were other names bandied about. “Lothar and The Hand People” was an actual band in the 60s so that was quickly ruled out. (but how did two different minds pick the same name AND in that order?) One that was high on the list was, indeed, “Five Dollar Footlong”. Usurped from it’s catchy radio jingle throne/status, it remained a close favorite and the band was almost called LUMBERYARD featuring “Five Dollar Footlong”. In the end it was two wordy and could have been misconstrued in too many different ways. (see above Rocco story) Litigation was also a factor. LUMBERYARD this week is a triple threat and has not been this size since Tom Sucheck (sic) played keys back in 2006. In addition to Dan we have Tom “Fingers of Flame” Fleming AND Paul “Chop Shop” Cotruvo on guitar! Shades of Lynyrd Skynyrd…Tommy Miller and world renown drummer Don Spindt make it a cozy quintet. Get there early and stay late for the musical shenanigans and local musician guest sit in’s… www.lumberyardtheband.com Until then, Dan PS Sorry for last month’s crazy/drunk/foul mouthed/unkempt/giblet/gimlet eyed guest sit in. He was a friend of a friend... Saturday 3/14/09 LUMBERYARD at Dallimonti’s in Pleasant Hill (925/944-5224) 9:30-1ish PLUS: WEDNESDAY 3/18/09 at Armando’s in Martinez: Dan plays electric guitar with song writer/singer Mark Caputo. All original music with 11 great songs played start to finish. David McCullough on bass and John on drums. 8pm 707 Marina Vista Ave Martinez, CA 94553 (925) 228-6985 |

Somehow LUMBERYARD finally has it’s own World Wide Web Interweb site. www.lumberyardtheband.com is where you can get the latest updates and photos! What kind food do we like and what is our favorite soft rock group? (hotdogs/Bread cause they go together) These are just a few of the fascinating things you’ll find (eventually) on this much anticipated web site. And now to the matter at hand: Rocco’s Pizzeria, where not only is the garlic hand prepared (not from a tin can) but you can meet Rocco himself as he walks/talks and presses flesh with the locals who enjoy the eating. (Rocco for Mayor!) See you there and check out the cool velvet curtain behind the musicians! Until then, Dan 3/07/09 Rocco’s Pizzeria at Ignacio and Oak Park in Walnut Creek 8:30-11ish (place hot dog here) |

Yet another gig I was turned on to by my mentor: Ken Cooper! His largesse is, in a word, Ginormous. (you were expecting large) Back-Forty-BBQ has become, thanks to Ken, the go-to place for ribs and smokin’ hot music. My music differs in that it’s much less smokin’ and more of a beta-blocking/cerebral celebration. We are talking subtle stuff here…but some people do notice. ALSO: Thanks for coming to see LUMBERYARD last Saturday. It was one of the biggest/loudest nights there EVER. (well, close to it) Until then, Dan Sat 2/28/09 Back-Forty-BBQ Dan solo acoustic 6-10pm (good place to come and sit in!) (place magnet here) |

LUMBERYARD returns to Dallimonti's this Saturday with an all new line up. We have our regular Rockin' Joe Aspatore bringin' his guitar thang along with Jim "Crop Duster" Bogios slammin' his bongos and showin' us where the down beat really is. Let's not forget Rick "Tree Top Lover" Lilley on Stratocaster galore. It will be a shootout between those two Fender aficionados...Then there's me "Diminutive Dan DeShara" (formerly "Chop Shop") on bass guitar. (no vintage guitars or amps this time!) I'm really too tall to be accused of being small but maybe it stands for something else besides my height.. Anyway, come on by and see who sits in with LBY (stock symbol for LUMBERYARD) so you too can say: "Hey! I saw this guy/gal sitting in with this band the other night and so on and so on (blah blah blah). Until then, Dan Sat 2/21/09 LUMBERYARD at Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill 9:30-1ish |
|
This Saturday at Rocco's... De La Salle Basketball is on national TV this Saturday ( game is in LA)...starts at 7 and should end 8;45 ish… Then the fun begins when Dan brings out his NEW, IMPROVED pedal board. It’s the same old pedals and wah wah but it’s bigger, which in Americanski, means better! Plus there’s the new “pedal board as microphone stand” which incorporates a threaded flange to fasten stand to board. Yankee ingenuity or so they say… ALSO: Watch for Dan at Corks in Danville on Valentines Day and LUMBERYARD returning to Dallimonti’s on February 21st. Saturday 2/07/09 Rocco’s Pizzeria 9-11:30ish RESPONSE from G. Bogios: (note spelling of "dashara") You know I was sitting down to dinner with the family - Wednesday night is meatloaf night my favorite - and willikers if I wasn't just saying "you know the only reason I have yet to see the mighty Dan Dashara is because of his gosh dern old timey pedal board!!" - to which my chipper son (ironically named) Chip replied "darn tootin' dad!!" Well, dad gum Dan Dashara if I have no excuse now!! I'll round up the family, the dog and grandma (she's not really part of the family cause she's too old and smells funny) in the station wagon and we'll head down to Rocco's for a refreshing sip of fresh pizza over the super keen neato daddy-o sounds of Dan Dashara!! |

LUMBERYARD at Dallimonti's This Saturday LUMBERYARD returns to Dallimonti’s with a new, exciting lineup. The ever mercurial group welcomes Rockin’ Joe Aspatore on guitar/vocals, Tom “Fingers of Flame” Fleming on guitar/vocals and “Test Pilot” for a new Ken Quilici handmade guitar. We are not sure which set or which songs he will test it on so, to be safe, come early and stay late. Jim Bogious is on drums/vocals and will bring his Marine Oyster Pearl set of vintage bongos. That leaves me, Dan DeShara, on bass/vocals and my Hofner Violin bass copy made by Jay Turser. Sort of lame but my real Hofner Club Bass is soaking in a moth ball solution which keeps the woolen parts moist and supple. (or so I am told) This is the first LUMBERYARD gig for 2009 so come by and say hello… PS Look for purple bruises from snowboarding on Friday. Until then, Dan Saturday 1/10/09 LUMBERYARD at Dallimonti’s in Pleasant Hill 9:30-1ish |

This Saturday 1/03/09 at Rocco's Pizzeria Is it too soon to announce Dan’s first gig of 2009? There’s been so much going on as of late… If you missed The Famous Trio at Rocco’s last week can I drop some names of special guests? None other than Jellyroll, Matt Tidmarsh, Kean Butterfield, Channing Dahl, Steve Hockle, Rob G, Paul Cotruvo, Toni, Kelly Pine, Duane Campbell and Totie Fields to name but a few. Rocco leaves early so he doesn’t have to be talked into singing “Substitute”. It was fun, full and loud. Dave the bartender says we are the best band that plays there even though we are the ONLY band that plays there… 2008 was quite the year: Went on a world tour with Avril Lavigne, bought a house, had a falling out with Pyramid Alehouse about playing music on Sundays, sold some stock and made 836.00, sat around the house for July/August, started up my 65 Ford Falcon for a few minutes in the driveway, made coffee for Channing every morning, bought and sold a bunch of guitars and amps and put a sink in the kitchen thus freeing up the bathroom for more appropriate functions. So, in closing, thanks to all of you who come out to support live music. I’m lucky to be able to do something I’ve been doing since I was 15 years old. (play music) Until then, Dan Sat 1/03/09 Rocco’s Pizzeria on Ygnacio at Oak Grove (solo acoustic) 8:30-11:30 pm |
|
The Famous Trio at Rocco's Pizzeria tonight! The exclamation point in the subject line denotes importance so please keep that in mind regarding tonight’s “event”. Sure, there will be extra microphones and amplifiers for our sit in guests but what really closes the deal is the BOSE PA and new “must be seen to be believed” LED lights. No live musical performance will ever be the same for the casual viewer. The Famous Trio has reached new heights in “giving the people what they want” in terms of spectacle and showmanship. There will even be a trampoline! (Ken?) Other local bands must rise to the occasion or be left behind in the dust! So celebrate your pre-New Years day with us at Rocco’s Pizzeria… Until then, Dan PS Happy New Year! 12/30/08 Rocco’s Pizzeria with The Famous Trio (not Threeo!) 8:30-12ish |
|
This Saturday should be interesting because Dan (that’s me) is premiering his new LED light show. It’s not much of a show really…the only thing that has changed is the bulbs look white but when electricity is applied they change from the aforementioned white to the desired color. Technology at its finest! Also there will be a subtle change in Dan’s guitars. The trusty 1976 Guild will be there on the back burner but the new Joseph “Tony Rice” model will make its debut. The spruce top with rosewood sides allows the “highs and lows’ to coexist peacefully without noisy midrange clutter. The result is a perfect balanced acoustic guitar that will be enjoyed for generations! JUST IN: Your favorite revolving band member group will rock it at Dallimonti’s on January 10 so mark your calendars for LUMBERYARDS first 2009 gig. Tom “Fingers of Flame” Fleming will join drummer Donn Spindt and bass player Tommy Miller and myself for slow jams and spoken word poetry… Until then, Dan Saturday 12/12/08 Rocco’s Pizzeria in Walnut Creek 8:-11:30 |
|
No gigs for Dan but... LOCAL LUMINARY MATT TIDMARSH is on Letterman tonight with Super Diamond so stay up or set the TIVO! That way when you see Matt walking around at the mall you can say “Hey! You look much bigger in person than on David Letterman!” (quote/unquote) (Matt last measured at 6’ 6” mit out platforms) Perhaps you remember Matt sitting in at Pyramid Brewery with his Tuxedo Standup Bass singing those timeless Johnny Cash songs… Until then, Dan |
|
LUMBERYARD is back with an exciting new line up. Along with perennial favorite Tommy Miller, Joe Aspatore brings his Tex-Mex approach to guitar and applies it to his new/old ’58 Telecaster. Donn Spindt is on tubs and sings the low rather than high “C”. What vintage guitar will Dan bring? '59 Gretsch? '63 Stratocaster? '65 Silvertone? Dan never knows until the last minute and often will close the front door, drive away, turn around, open door, switch the chosen guitar with another, close door again, drive away and arrive at gig. (sadly pathetic but true) Now if only Dan can leave out the “blue notes” on those blistering solos. Hopefully all the regulars that come to “sit in” will make it down… Until then, Dan Saturday 11/15/08 LUMBERYARD at Dallimonti’s 9:30-1 (pm) |
|
Our good friend (speaking for the populace) Sonny Fitman is moving to Minnesota soon. Yes, I’m just as surprised as you are! So I plan on going to Vines in Danville this Saturday before my Rocco’s gig at 8:30. Sonny has been one of the bright lights here in the Bay Area. Excellent voice and great song selections. Nice public address system and cool acoustics. Witty banter and well executed elocution. And a hell of a nice guy! So be there to show your appreciation for Sonny before he leaves town! Sat 11/08/08 Rocco’s in Walnut Creek 8:30-11:30 plus Sonny Fitman at Vines across from Bridges in Danville 7-10 |

This will be a weekend that will live on in infamy forever… I’m back at Kinder’s after a two year absence. The powers that be have made it all too clear that this ”meaty” venue cannot call an end to the 2008 season without a visit from you know who. Why has it taken so long? Management was unavailable for comment. NEWS FLASH: Although last weeks missive was all in jest about taking Joe’s Friday night gig, now it seems that Joe will laid up nursing a deeply bruised leg for at least a month. Dan (that’s me) will fill in at Grissini’s until Joe Aspatore is full mended. God Speed! Rocco’s will be rocking this Saturday when I bring the house down while simultaneously raising the roof. Known for excellent pizza and Frank Sinatra memorabilia (don’t forget hanging Vespa!) Rocco’s also has fine wine by the glass/bottle and beer on tap! What more could you need? Think about it! BIG SCREEN TVs! Until then, Dan 10/16 Thursday Kinders in Benicia 6-9 10/17 Friday Grissini’s in the Concord Hilton 7-10 10/18 Saturday Rocco’s Pizzeria in Walnut Creek 8:30-11:30 |
|
What can be said when one reaches and grabs a big gig? Should one’s grasp exceed one’s grip? As difficult as it may be to mull over that little nugget, the cold hard truth is that I will have my “old school” BOSE system set up this Friday at Grissini’s in the Concord Hilton. Joe Aspatore will have his 21st Century BOSE system elsewhere or maybe dry docked at one of many marinas that populate the Bay Area. Here what I will do to make sure I am invited back by the management: (maybe Saturdays as Joe is an institution on Fridays) I will disguise my BOSE system as the newer, more sleek version. Then I will look “up to date.” Joe brings two lights – I will bring three! (maybe throw in a color wheel for some subliminal Christmas feel-good emotions) I will constantly be repeating the following phrase: “Hey, let’s give it up for the wait-staff and management!” This simple yet effective idiom will endear me to the staff and CFO. It will be a win/win situation… By the way: Thanks to all who came by for LUMBERYARD at Dallimonti’s. We had some stellar appearances from local luminaries. We’ll be back November 15th. Friday 10 (not 9)/10 Dan solo at Grissini’s in the Concord Hilton on Diamond. 6-10 |
|
I have been invited back to Corks in Danville for more music. There was some sort of “class reunion” there last time and I’m not sure they will have another one this time. But this is the time of year for those sort of things so perhaps… The good thing about Corks Wine Store is that they have much more than corks for sale. You can get corks with wine but they make you buy the bottle too. (sort of a scam I think) I bought the “cork deal” (their name not mine) and found the wine to my liking. I could actually taste the “forest floor” but I thought the “hint of cherry” was more like an “insinuation” and the “robust tannins exploding on my back palate” seemed to, in my opinion, not make it past the front palate. Note to self: I must take a “wine appreciation class!” Glad to announce that we have Donn Spindt on drums this Saturday with LUMBERYARD at Dallimonti’s. Not only does he sing the lowest possible note in the harmonic cluster but also plays a wonderful Richard Starkey backbeat. Don’t be the only one at the water-cooler Monday morning to say you missed this special event. Imagine the shame and humiliation! Until then, Dan Friday 10/3 Corks Wine Store in DANville on Hartz Ave 8-11 pm Saturday 10/4 Dallimonti’s in w/ LUMBERYARD Pleasant Hill 9:30 – 1ish |

When Corks Wine Store’s Chad asked me to give him a blurb about myself for advertising purposes on the internet, this is what blurbed out: Dan DeShara has been playing music in the Tri-City Area of Walnut Creek/Pleasant Hill/Danville for over 25 years. He arrived on the East Bay music scene as a member of The Buzztones in the early 80s and has continued to “captivate audiences” and “wow them” with “shock and awe” and occasional pyrotechnics on his many vintage guitars. (they left out this next part) See Dan and “experience the acoustic wonder” of music from the “celestial spheres” and the “deep south bible belt.” Plus a lot of Beatles songs… Frid 9/19 Corks Wine Bar 411 Hartz, Danville 8-11 Sat 9/20 Rocco’s Pizzeria In Walnut Creek 8:30-11:30 Sun 9/21 Pyramid Brewery In Walnut Creek w/ Ken Cooper 6-9:30 http://www.corkswinestore.com/ 925/362-0007 |

Dan returns to the fun-loving sports bar that is ROCCO’S this Saturday. I guess the apostrophe “S” in said name shows possession which, in short, means Rocco owns his own bar and restaurant. Or perhaps since it is really named ROCCO’S PIZZERIA I would assume he owns a pizzeria-type establishment. I’ve had every pizza on the list starting with, progenally (sic) named Dante’s Inferno (again apostrophe “S”) and I can state in a loud, clear, self assured voice: Rocco’s Pizza has many imitators but no equals! (Rocco, leave the cash at the bar this time…) And now on to other matters: Ken Cooper has invited me to accompany him at Pyramid Brewery this Sunday for some good old-thyme acoustic music. We’ll use the Bose PA, of course, and hopefully there will be many guests stopping by to say hello and sing a song or two. As Rudy says: It is what it is. Until then, Dan Sat 9/20 Rocco’s Pizzeria 8:30–11:30 Sun 9/21 Pyramid Brewery w/ Ken Cooper 6-9:30 |

I reunite with Joe Aspatore this Thursday at Kinders in Benicia! Joe’s newly designed BOSE system will proudly be on display for your aural and visual enlightenment. Bring the kids and have any meat platter you desire… This Saturday brings LUMBERYARD back to Dallimonti’s. In this version/incarnation we have “you know who” on quasi-guitar, Paul Cotruvo on real guitar, Tommy Miller on bass and Michael Urbano on drums. We will even using a set list! Bring the kids and have any meatball platter you desire… Until then, Dan Wednesday 8/13 Channing Dahl B-Day Thursday 8/14 Kinders in Benicia w/ Rockin Joe Aspatore 6-9pm Saturday 8/16 Dallimonti’s in Pleasant Hill w/ LUMBERYARD 9:30 – 12:30ish/pm |

It is three am where you are as I write this. (12 noon here) Channing and I are on our way to Prague leaving Budapest momentarily. Aside from the 30.00 toast and sausage/frankfurter lunch we had yesterday it has been quite a adventurous trip. Paul and I will be entertaining at Rocco’s Pizza Palace whilst he is away in Italy. Please come by and see Dan’s new haircut as it will be the talk of the town for at least a moment if not minutes. Until then, Dan in Budapest Sat 7/26/08 Rocco’s Pizza at Ygnacio and Oak Grove 8:30 pm w/ PAUL COTRUVO! |

Last Sunday was grand even though some of the “I’ll be there for your only show at Pyramid” were “no shows”. But then again some others who(m) weren’t expected showed up so it all worked out in the wash. There is even a video of one song Ken and I did on youtube. ONE= pun intended… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNn0_XO5WtU And so, there is one more chance for you supposed loyal Dan-fans (is there really such a thing? I think not, but it does rhyme) to see Dan in all his so-so post Avril tour glory. Rocco is having us, Joe and Dan, play the pizzeria THAT IS “Rocco’s” this Saturday. Come see Joe’s new Bose PA! Looks like a stick?! Sounds like a forest! (of speakers that is…) Then I’m off to Europe until mid-July. As some of you know, I do not have my Sunday Pyramid gig to come home to. (complaints or praise for this can be made to Cade Crockett, ccrockett@PyramidBrew.com) Perhaps we will find another place to “bring out the jams!” on Sundays. Until then, Dan Sat 5/17/08 Rocco’s Pizzeria in Walnut Creek (Ygnacio and Oak Grove) with Joe and Dan 8:30-11:30 |

Dan returns from his North America/Canadian tour with the lithesome Avril Lavigne. Having only made conversation with Avril once (twelve carefully selected words) and eye contact twice, there is little to say about the grueling 15 hour days that made up this two month tour. Eleven crew guys traveling on a bus and late night pizza sort of speaks for itself. I gained then lost 11 ounces. I got sick in Canada. I washed clothes in a common Laundromat in East Rutherford, NJ. I was lavished with praise for my engineering skills one moment only to be admonished like a naughty school boy the next. It was the experience of a lifetime… I’ll be playing with Ken Cooper this Sunday at my “former” Sunday night gig. Pyramid Brewery has decided, in its infinite wisdom, and upon my return in July, to discontinue the “Dan DeShara and Friends” modus operandi that has existed on Sundays the last five years. Apparently my pattern of having different and talented musicians every Sunday was incompatible with their vision of music. I pleaded my case most unsuccessfully with the manager Cade Crockett. He did not seemed amused by my “why try and fix something that’s not broken” defense. My Sundays just won’t be the same… Until then, Dan Sunday 5/11/08 Pyramid Brewery with Ken Cooper! 6-9:30 (pm, lol) |

Hello all! Weather is fine here in Victoria and the first Avril show is tonight. We did a week rehearsals in Vancouver and go back for a show on the 7th My job is for a much younger version of Dan but I am rising to the occasion, so to speak. The first day was a 12 hour marathon of “too much information”. Then there was the 16.5 hour day of cabling and then fixing the gigantic electric back wall upon which we send our video content. (not sure what “content” means at this point) (lol) It’s a very interesting life, to say the least, and I seem to be always on call for any little thing. Average day is from 8:30 until 11:30 or so. Since I have attended the “University of Life” and have always been a “Jack of All Trades, Master of None” I get to trouble shoot lots of problems and feel very useful. The patch bay (see pic) has me a bit overwhelmed with wires running every which way with my brain echoing the every which way part. I also seem to touch buttons before they should be touched and making more work for my boss, the video director. (I just did this seconds ago as he called me away from this email to show me how to “store a scene” and so I pushed a button and said “like this?” and he said “Shit, not yet!” ) I’ve got to learn to keep my hands to myself so I don’t look like a numbskull…I feel stupid on a daily basis until I learn what I need to learn. So far everyone is extremely nice (Canadians) and like to help the FNG. (F%*(# new guy) Some Brits and Aussies too. My job is too set up the patch bay for routing all video and audio signals and then control the iris of the three cameras during the show. I have three paddles (see pic) which I push for more light or pull towards me for less light. I do this every three seconds for the entire 1.25 hour show. (also push record on the DVD recorder to record the show!) Avril has NOT acknowledged me yet but one day we will have words! I’ll send more info later when I get the chance as I have been really busy doing all sorts of stuff and junk. It’s lonely out here with out my friends back in California but a man has to do what a man has to do! Until then, Dan PS Channing is visiting and that has been a gas! PSPS Had strange dream last night where I was on my way to do an acoustic duo gig with Al Chan (!) and when I got there is was Jim Funk instead (!!) and then a bearded Ken Cooper got mad because he was on the lower floor of the club expecting me to play guitar with him. He even raised his voice in my direction and seemed to not want to do the gig solo and then proceeded to admonished me for not coming through on the gig! What’s with the beard? What’s with the dream? Where was Al Chan? I woke up before Ken stopped yelling at me… |
|
Joe Aspatore has invited me to play one last gig before I trot on out of here for four months. I hope you can make it because this is it until I come back in July (or sooner with my tail tucked neatly between my legs) Until then, Dan PS I can’t find any Avril Lavigne wallpaper… Friday 2/22 Joe and Dan at Grissini’s in the Concord Hilton 7-10 pm (not the airport Hilton!) |

I will be serenading blissful couples in Danville tonight from 4:30- 8:30. I predict lots of the color red and maybe a flower or two being exchanged. Mudds will be a love-fest tonight… And now for Rocco’s: My last experiment went awry when I mentioned my last gig for four months would be at Rocco’s. The turnout was, shall we say, in a word, underwhelming. Perhaps it is in my best interest to never book a gig on the night before the Super Bowl. (Go Giants!) My heartfelt thanks to Dave G, Melody and Jeff, Alan G. for making the trek out to say goodbye. And so I negotiated a deal with Mr Rocco to return for another try. In no uncertain terms Mr Rocco insinuated that I should bring in the “big guns” (a sure fire draw) and started throwing around names like Joe Aspatore, Joe Aspatore and, of course, Joe Aspatore. I contacted Joe threw the usual channels and he graciously cleared his schedule for this Saturday. And he threw in his willingness to take over my Mudds Tuesday night gigs until I return from my “TRIP AROUND THE WORLD” with Avril Lavigne starting on February 24th. I have been practicing catching sweaty towels, sweaty guitars, and, of course, sweaty punk schrunchies that Ms. Lavigne will be throwing my way as she performs her show. I will sanitize these items and return them the next day for the next sweaty show. I’ll be back in mid-July with a two weeks stop-over in May. Until then, Dan Thursday 2/14/08 Mudds in Danville 4:30-8:30 Saturday 2/16/08 Rocco’s Pizzeria in Walnut Creek 8:30-11:30 (PS No Super Bowl Party this night) |
|
Dan will be at Rocco’s this Saturday, 2/2/08, with his “All Star Review”. Musical guests TBA! This may be the last time to see Dan until mid-July as a little job working on the video production team for Avril Lavigne has popped up. Of course, nothing is for sure until you are on a plane with your toothbrush and assortment of clean underwear but as of this email, all systems are go! Hopefully I will get back into things at Pyramid on Sundays upon my return but who knows what will happen in my absence? Perhaps it will be snatched away by Tom Fleming/Ken Cooper/Gary King/Joe Aspatore/Paul Cotruvo/Channing Dahl/Kean Butterfield/Ray Shulte/Jim Funk and/or persons unknown! Having said that, I am still at Mudds in San Ramon on Tuesdays 5:30-8:30 thru February… Until then, Dan Sat 2/2/08 Rocco’s Pizzeria in Walnut Creek 8:30 – 11:30 PS Kudos’ to Tari Lacourt for a fine performance in her CD debut party. (I played guitar on two songs so I’m still waiting for my free CD!) |

Back from Christmas time in Phoenix causes me to think back about 2007. Great year at The Pyramid Brewery with many talented people dropping by to help Dan out with some songs and fill out the nine o’clock slot with some stellar seven, sometimes eight, people jams. Don’t forget to remember this was done on a stage built for two. Christmas in Phoenix is always fun, especially when the “chores” chart is trotted back out. Did I really have to “weed the back yard” and “take out garbage” and “pick fleas out of my sister and brothers pelts” when I was a young, strapping lad? What about the ultimate in emasculation? “Washing dishes” once a week! Hard to believe what parents made kids do back then. My girlfriend Channing thinks it builds “character” but I say hah! This Saturday I play rock guitar with “The Big Finish” at Petar’s. It’s really three quarters of the high energy dance band “Cover to Cover” with me making it four. It will be “Gibson Les Paul Night” so some out for some drinks, fun and get your picture taken with Paul Cotruvo! PS I still play every Tuesday at Mudds in San Ramon 5:30-8:300 (pm!) Saturday 1/12/08 Petar’s in Lafayette 9-1 w/ The Big Finish |

Well, it has been a fun year. Let’s recap for a moment. Fractured my finger wakeboarding. First surgery ever! No one could see/hear any difference in my guitar playing. (that speaks volumes!) Also sprained ankle and wrist snow boarding. Also fell backwards on snow impacting my occipital parietal bone thus seeing stars thus eliciting the moans and groans of fellow snow enthusiasts as they whisked past me on the bunny slope. Turned the Big 50 in New Orleans and had fun at Jazz Festival seeing ZZ top and Counting Crows and then went to huge “crawfish on newspaper on a fold out metal table in a backyard” party put on by many women with crew cuts and sandals. My girlfriend Channing was a big hit there. I jumped up and down for an hour before I was noticed…and then asked to politely leave with my pogo stick. (no sudden moves Mr!) Stayed up with Aunt Millie playing dominos until three in the morning sipping “sipping whiskey”. (out of control!) If that’s not enough, my semi-evil ex-landlord decided to raise the rent once again on my home in Alamo (22 years!) thereby prompting me to finally beg mother for a loan to make a down payment on a 3b/2b in lovely Concord. No fireplace and the people across the street have 15 cars, two motorcycles and the obligatory motor-home on jacks. Quite the culture shock and see no way of getting used to it before spring 2010. There’s much more but then who would read my book when it comes out? Off to Phoenix to see the family and will hopefully see you on the 30th at Rocco’s with “The Famous Trio”. Happy Holidays to you and yours! Sincerely and until then, Dan Tuesdays in 2008 at Mudds Restaurant in San Ramon 5:30-8:30 pm December 30th at Rocco’s in Walnut Creek w/ The Famous Trio 9-1 |

Joe Aspatore is taking the night off and I will take his place at Grissini’s! It’s the place to be on a Friday night! The parking lot has been transformed into a drag strip with funny cars and high-octane dragsters competing for cash prizes. “Big Daddy” Don Garlets and Don “The Snake” Prudome will battle to the death for the much sought after Concord Hilton Trophy! While you’re there, get the salmon on a bed of risotto. (my fav) Until then, Dan Frid 12/14/07 Grissini’s at the Concord Hilton 8-11 (pm) |

Two strange words together if you ask me: Mudds and Grissini’s. The only way they really work well together is if they are used in a sentence like: “I’m playing music this week at Mudds and Grissini’s”. For some reason (Joe Aspatore) I finally got my big break and got a Friday at the Concord Hilton! It’s the best “room” on the West Coast and there’s lots of “ambiance” and “character”. Don’t forget the chow! Speaking of good chow, I would be at fault if I did not proclaim in a loud, reassuring voice that Mudds also has excellent chow and a nifty bar. I’ll be there not once but twice this week and it’s worth the long line to get in. There’s lots of “ambiance” and “character” at Mudds as well… Until then, Dan Tues 12/04/07 Mudds Restaurant in San Ramon solo 5:30 - 8:30 10 Boardwalk off Crow Canyon (West of 680) (925) 837-9387 Thurs 12/06/07 Mudds Restaurant in San Ramon solo 5:30 - 8:30 10 Boardwalk off Crow Canyon (West of 680) (925) 837-9387 Frid 12/07/07 Grissini’s in the Concord Hilton off Diamond Blvd 8-11pm |
|
Thanks to Ken Cooper I got a new gig at a new venue. Mudds has an acoustically designed bar so you can actually carry on a sotto voce conversation and listen to music at the same time. Harmonica extraordinaire Kean Butterfield will be sitting in and fulfilling all your blues harp wants… PS The Butternut squash Soup is “Beyond Fabulous”. Until then, Dan Mudds Restaurant in San Ramon solo 5:30 - 8:30 10 Boardwalk off Crow Canyon (West of 680) (925) 837-9387 |

You have probably been there, right off of Diamond which is right off of Willow Pass which is right off HWY 680. The Hilton is known for late night R’N’R get-togethers. There’s a bar in Grissini’s which serves cocktails and beer. That’s it! No wine or Mojitos or foo-foo drinks of any sort. So don’t expect any umbrellas in your drink. Plus we prefer the hard drinkin’ types! PS It will be a lean winter for Dan and his music but there will be sporadic engagements here and there… Until then, Dan Fri 11/16/07 Grissini’s at the Concord Hilton 8-11 (pm) |
|
Paul Cotruvo and I will play guitars while drummer Ron Neuhauser and bassist Jon Leonardy keep the funky/syncopated beat goin’ on. We have never, ever played together as a group so there should be some surprises! It’s fun, it’s crowded, it’s PETAR’S! Until then, Dan Sat 11/10/07 Petar’s in Lafayette (behind The Roundup) 9pm-12:30pm |

Music Lovers Unite! Ignore those big screen TVs and watch, listen and learn! Ken Cooper plays all the notes on his guitar while Dan does the best he can with only three fingers.. Saturday 11/03/07 Rocco’s Pizzeria in Walnut Creek 8:30-11:30 |

Unless and “Act of God” situation comes along, this will be the last Sunday of the 2007 season. We’ve had great weather and amazing talent come and go on the small plywood bandstand. Even Al Green came blow to blow some harp… Most Valuable Player? It has to go to Kean Butterfield who not only plays a grand harmonica, but shows up every Sunday to sit in, sing and also record the proceedings. Thanks Kean for your love of music and commitment to the cause! (he’s followed closely by Channing Dahl who also shows up every Sunday to sing) Too many others to thank… Also a big thanks to all who have shared their talent and time to fill out Sunday nights. It has been an exceptional year. Let’s not forget you, the patrons of Pyramid….kudos to you for making it all happen by simply showing up to hear live music, an endangered species. See you all soon, Dan Saturday 10/27/07 LUMBERYARD (Dan, Joe Aspatore, Tom Miller, Alan Thiele) Hercules Farmers Market (Home Depot parking lot) 4-8pm Sunday 10/28/07 Pyramid Brewery w/ Gary King (and special guests) |

This Sunday w/ Paul Cotruvo at the WC Pyramid Brewery Hopefully the weather will be kind and allow Paul Cotruvo and I to do the penultimate gig we have set for this Sunday. So far we have been dodging the rain drops and Sundays have been relatively dry, with the occasional split beer wetting down the stage floor, as it were. Last week’s engagement went over like gangbusters with Joe Aspatore back in fine form. Special guests Channing Dahl, Gary King, Bass Player Solar Installation Expert Duane, Kean Butterfield and Dave McCullough were there for possibly the last Sunday of the season. As it is we are going forward day by day until we get the dreaded “no show tonight because of rain” phone call. So come out whilst you can! Until then, Dan 10/21/07 Pyramid Brewery w/ Paul Cotruvo 6-9:30ish pm Next week: Gary King to close it all out! |

Hey ya’ll, Well, we got the go ahead for another month (October) at the Pyramid Brewery. Now perhaps the people I tried cajoling, shaming and let’s not forget bribing, will make it down to hear some good music and even gooder food. (good, gooder, goodest) Last week with Ken Cooper was a gas and Mr Cooper was on fire if you know what I mean. Special guest Joe Aspatore dropped by and turned up the heat even more. We have Joe, Paul Cotruvo and Gary King to fill out the month. PS Knowing I had an air tight case, the litigation issues from last week were settled out of court. Now how do we split up 34.00? (I did the best I could) I’m taking suggestions… Until then, Dan Thursday Dan joins Joe Aspatore in Benicia at Kinders 6-9pm (707) 745-4453 1006 W 3rd St, Benicia Saturday Broadway Plaza Walnut Creek 3-4 pm w/ The Shills Sunday Pyramid Brewery w/ Rockin’ Joe Aspatore 6-9:30 What a difference a week makes! More music this Sunday (weather permitting...) w/ Ken Cooper! Just like you, I thought last Sunday was the “last Sunday” but I was informed by the bus-boy that, indeed, there would be one-maybe-two more Sundays if the weather held out…How would he know this and not me? I’m sure I make at least as much money as he does so why would I be left out of the loop? And what about those of you who came down especially BECAUSE it was, supposedly, the last Sunday of the 2007 season? I’m asking for financial compensation for those of you who, as I do, feel slighted and embarrassed because of this obviously avoidable snafu. More on this easily winnable class action suit (with Super-fund) later in the month… If you are not concerned with seeking monetary damages being wired straight to your account (I will prove victorious in litigation!) then rejoice in the fact that Ken Cooper will be joining me for this POSSIBLE last Sunday. Hopefully lots of those people who did NOT show up last week (who therefore will not be eligible for Super-fund) will be on hand this week for the musical mayhem that may of may not occur. Mystery guest from last week will, perhaps, be on hand this week… Until then, Dan Friday 10/05/07 Rocco’s Pizzeria in Walnut Creek 8:30 - 11:30 pm (note FRIDAY night!) Sunday 10/07/07 Pyramid Brewery w/ Ken Cooper 6:00 – 9:30 pm (this could be the last one…) |
|
I’m hoping all the past musicians/singers/egg shakers will show up for the last Sunday at Pyramid. Last week with Ken Cooper was delightful and this week can be just as good if, you my ever loyal “fan-base”, shows up to make it be a huge end-of-the-season-blow-out,,, Guitar phenom Natalie could be stopping by with her trusty Martin acoustic to add tasty blues licks to Gary King’s blue-plate specials. Kean, Channing, Rob G, Gus B, maybe even Ken Cooper will drop in to add to the “madness and mayhem” that is sure to ensue. ANOTHER SPECIAL GUEST MAY ALSO SHOW UP! PS Last chance for you with children to come on down and expose them to Something other than MTV videos and Playstation 3! Until then, Dan Saturday The Pheasant and the Pear in Danville 6:30-10:30 (weather permitting) 267 Hartz Ave. (in the Clock Tower Center), Danville. 925-820-6611 Sunday Walnut Creek Pyramid Brewery with Gary King 6-9:30 (weather permitting) |
This Sunday with Ken Cooper (weather permitting) Hopefully the weather will cooperate with us this Sunday as we wind down the 2007 summer series at Pyramid. Ken Cooper is on board and we know what that means… plenty of high-falootin guitar playing and lots of songs about farm hands and cowboy folklore. Bring you digital cameras and high-tech HD video recorders for this once in a lifetime event. Next week we have Gary King playing his first live gig in over a year. What a score for Dan and Pyramid! We welcome all guitar players and singers to sit in at our last show of the summer so pack up the kids and stop making excuses! Until then, Dan Sun 9/23/07 Pyramid in Walnut Creek with Ken Cooper 6-9:30 |
|
This Sunday with Paul Cotruvo (weather permitting) There may be only three Sundays left so why not use the best there is for the final Summer-fest-outdoor-in-yo-face salute to Pyramid’s live music. Paul will shock-n-awe you with is encyclopedic knowledge of music from every era of recorded history. Even from eight track tapes! So, do as I do, watch, listen and learn… Next week we have the incredible Ken Cooper back in the saddle and ready to furnish ya’ll with his homespun humor and “tone for days” guitar sound. His voice ain’t bad neither! Only three Sundays left so if you have run out of excuses to attend, I, Dan, will be making a list and checking it twice. So bring out the kids, Randy P, Mr Concrete Mike P, and, of course, you know who… Until Then, Dan Sunday 9/16/07 Pyramid Alehouse with Paul Cotruvo 6-9:30 |

This Sunday with Tom Fleming After a well attended Labor Day Weekend Sunday show with Kean Butterfield, we are looking forward to a blistering hot night with Tom Fleming. Also note: I have a new address after 22 years so if you need it please ask… Sun 9/09/07 Pyramid with Tom FOF Fleming Next week Paul Cotruvo. Next next week KEN COOPER!!!! |

Norman Collins brings his witty, urbane, SF attitude and guitar prowess to the Pyramid Brewery this Sunday. Even though the brand name of his guitar had been scratched off the headstock, I can assure you it is legit! (Taylor) He has plenty of good stories about his travels around the globe. (ask him about the Belgian Congo insect imbibing) It’s quite amusing and poignant yet slightly repulsive…. Last week was “off the hook” and it was all because Matt “Big Bass Man” Tidmarsh came down with his entourage and blew the lid off the open air patio. When he abruptly vacated the building, there was the audible sucking sound of the huge vacuum he left for Tom “FOF” Fleming and myself to fill. We enlisted the help of the wait staff, management, onlookers, pedestrians, police on horseback, indigenous peoples, audience members, children eating ice cream cones and even the Green Berets but nothing could equal the style, panache and 6’ 5” magnitude of Mr Tidmarsh. See him tonight (Friday) with SUPER DIAMOND in gold plated Blackhawk for FREE from 7-8:30. I’m going just for the lessons in showmanship… Until then, Dan Sun 8/26/07 Pyramid Brewery with Norman Collins 6-9:30 PS Happy Birthday Day Mom!!! |
|
This Sunday should be one to remember. First we have Tom “Fingers of Flame” Fleming back in rotation and Matt “Big Bass Man” Tidmarsh will drop by after his weekend gigs with Super Diamond at Bimbo’s. Look for lot’s of Elvis since this is the 30th anniversary of his untimely death. We should celebrate his birthday but I didn’t make up the rules. In addition, we will be doing Part 2 of Channing Dahl’s birthday since I failed to send out a mailer for last week with Paul Cotruvo and alerting you so you could bring a flower or bottle of Cabernet and share in some cake and candles. We will just sing her happy birthday again thus ending her birthday week. So come one by and have fun with us: Kean, Tom, Matt, Channing, Sonny, Clive, Bethany, Teri, Toni, Stephanie, Rob G, Natalie, Matthew and who ever else comes by to sit in. Until then, Dan Sun 8/19/07 Pyramid w/ Tom FOF Fleming 6-9:30ish |

Paul is back by popular demand. His ratings went though the roof when he followed Pink Cadillac with Time of Your Life. Two huge hits back to back! Why didn’t I ever think of that? This will be the last weekend with the “stinky finger splint” as it has become to be known. The pins will be painfully extracted August first and then there will be the weight lifting exercises to get it back in shape. A single ounce is the starting weight and we will see how far up the scale I can go! I have to be careful so that finger doesn’t go Arnold and is out of proportion with the other digits. Sort of how my arms were last summer when I over did it… Until then, Dan Sunday 7/29 Pyramid Brewery with Paul Cotruvo 6-9:30 pm |

Dear readers, Sometimes I get the good email: “Hey, you sounded great last night at your gig” (generic exclamatory remark for you convenience) Or maybe: “Thanks for sending the emails!” (again, generic) And then you get ones like this from “radmadchad@???.com: “Stop sending me this sh%t!” To my best recollection I never forced “rad mad chad” to be on my email list. He must have volunteered his email address to me at some point. Maybe he was two sheets to the wind or perhaps I held a gun to his head. That’s not what’s important here! My question is this. What ever happened to civility? Common courtesy to your fellow (wo)man? At first I tried to cut him some slack…maybe he was in extreme emotional pain from a recent and painful breakup of a relationship? Who hasn’t been there before? But maybe he said to her: “Stop sending me this sh%t!” and she was hurt and broke off the Caribbean wedding and threw the ring into the compost pile. Or maybe he just lacks common courtesy. Instead of saying simply, as others have done, “please take me off your email list” he had to go the extra mile and use the “S” word. So I ask you reader, what would your response be? Would you make fun of his really lame/cool 80s email name? “Hey I’m “rad” cause I go raging at the beach! And I’m “mad” cause I just do crazy sh$t all the time! And hey! It all rhymes with Chad!” Rad Mad Chad! Maybe it's a homage to Mad Max? I only know one Chad who works on my Jeep and in these times of economic uncertainty he would making a bad business choice to eschew me from his client list. Maybe I jumped to conclusions by not trying to really understand where he was coming from. I should have given it some serious contemplation and really searched my soul to see if I had perhaps offended RadMadChad in some way. That would have been the civil thing to do! Instead, having the knee jerk mentality that is all the rage these days, I had just enough time to hit the reply button with “So be it f$ck-wad!” Now, who’s the civil one here? Until then, Dan Sun 7/16/07 Pyramid Brewery with the great SF guitarist/singer Norman Collins! 6-9:30ish (pm) |

First with the rumors: Yes, Dan did fracture his middle finger, left hand, three weeks ago during a failed wakeboard outing and yes Dan did have surgery last Tuesday. So those rumors are true. Now some people say Dan sounds no different than before he broke his finger. In other words, Dan’s loss of a finger, in use only, has neither helped nor harmed is musical output. There has been no discernable difference! Could this be damning with faint praise? Or maybe Dan is such a trooper that even the sight of gushing blood from said finger during “ Margarita Ville” would not dissuade the job from being done. This Sunday Dan will being playing with the new surgically enhanced (wire, pins, gauze anti-bacterial cream) finger not unlike one of Steve Austin’s digits. (Six Million Dollar Man) Come see this 21st Century Marvel! He’s not making an obscene gesture, it’s just a medical necessity! Paul Cotruvo will be there to even out the rough edges… Until then, Dan Sunday 7/8/07 Pyramid Brewery w/Paul Cotruvo 6-9:30 |

Fingers of Flame is too much to wrap ones mind around so I’ll try to simplify things from this point on: FOF! This only pertains to one Tom Fleming, (to the exclusion of all other Tom’s) After months of depriving you, the faithful Pyramid followers, Tom has acquiesced to perform once again at Sundays best venue. Come see what vintage gear Tom brings to the plate! Try and decipher his pseudo jazz-a-billy chord meanderings. How does he do it? And what about those repaginated mono-chromatic runs? Is this where FOF comes from? Bring your camera! PS If you missed Dan in the Unauthorized Rolling Stones, which most of you did, the offer is now no longer on the table. Because of “artistic differences” Dan can no longer be seen in the Keef spot. It was fun while it lasted…no, really… PSPS Welcome back Kristin!!!! Until then, Dan Sunday 7/1/07 Walnut Creek Pyramid w/ Tom FOF Fleming 6-9:30 Paul Cotruvo is back 7/08/07 Norman Collins is back 7/15/07 |

Who has Dan been trying to gig with, like, forever? No other than Dave Kelleher! (no longer a mystery) Star of theatre (Judas in Jesus Christ Super Star), screen (no info here) and stage, he will fill you shock and awe as he dispenses tidbits from his almost limitless song list. We will wing it, of course, so come by and see what works and what doesn’t. It’s that spontaneity thing that makes Sundays so much the rage these days (LOL) You missed another great Sunday this last week as we had three guitars, one stand up bass (Matt Tidmarsh) and one harmonica all playing in the same key. It was, in a word(s), musically sublime. PS July 1st sees the return of Tom “Fingers of Flame” Fleming. Until then, Dan Sunday 6/24/07 Pyramid in Walnut Creek with Dave Kelleher 6-9:30 |

Paul Cotruvo “rocks out” this Sunday on Father’s Day at the Pyramid. Son’s, bring your dad and show him how much he mean to you by lining up a sample tray of the Pyramid brews. Much better than some card with a golf club and cigar on the front… Dan is STILL working it out with URS this weekend and it should be cool...why?...cause we are playing The North Beach Festival in SF this Saturday. And Rancho Nicasio on Friday! Some come by and get your fill of Stones. PS It’s Hilton and not Hearst! Until then, Dan Friday 6/15/07 Rancho Nicasio 8:30-12:30 Saturday 6/16/07 North Beach Festival, Washington Square SF 4:45-6:00 Sunday 6/17/07 Pyramid in Walnut Creek with Paul Cotruvo 6-9:30 |

This weekend looks fairly complex and here’s why: I ran over my cell phone thus rendering the “contacts” inside unreachable by satellite cellular phone! So there goes my Norman Collins contact! Now, if he reads my email (which I assume no one really does…) he will see this plea for help and show up this Sunday to play music with me at the Pyramid Brewery. If not, I play solo. (notwithstanding sit in guests) So show up and see if Norman shows up! ALSO: I leave for Sparks, Nevada momentarily to play “Street Vibrations Spring Fever Rally” tonight at 5:30. Paul Cotruvo (who plays Father’s Day with me at Pyramid) says he can make it to Nevada in three and one half hours. Because of circumstances beyond my control, (i.e. morning coffee, “The View” on ABC, etc) I’m leaving late and so I will, undoubtedly, feel the need for speed. Paul has graciously offered to pay for my speeding ticket (if they can catch me!) along with attending the traffic school classes. He is “good people”. If I wake up early enough I will then race to the San Mateo County Event Center for a URS gig at 3:30 on Saturday and then it’s off to the Little Fox in Redwood City for yet another URS* gig at 8:00. PS The great Dice Dawson is in town reeking havoc so you have been forewarned! Until then, Dan Friday 6/8/07 URS at the “Street Vibrations Spring Fever Rally” in Sparks 5:30-8:30 Saturday 6/9/07 URS at the 107.7 The Bone Brewfest w/ The URS 3:30- 4:45 and Zepperella 2-3 Located at The Sam Mateo County Event Center. URS at the Little Fox in Redwood City 8-12 Sunday 6/10/07 Dan acoustic at the WC Pyramid Brewery with (or without) Norman Collins 6-9:30 |

Paul Cotruvo brings his vast catalogue of songs along with distant memories of a childhood spent in The Hamptons. He was familiar with the goings on in many affluent households and once delivered a paper to the doorstep of the Hilton compound on his first paper route. (Paris was still a twinkle in her father’s eye) If only he had known then what he knows now! Just think! Go ahead…let your imagination run wild… Having said that, Paul will bring his intrinsic sense of humor and gravitas to this Sunday’s event so bring your camera and capture for all time the “high energy” that is PAUL! Also, there’s another URS gig this Friday in SF at the Blackthorn Tavern on Irving St. Until then, Dan Frid 6/1/07 Unauthorized Rolling Stones in SF at The Blackthorn Tavern 9:30-1 Sun 6/03/07 The Pyramid Brewery with Paul Cotruvo 6-9:30 |

Finally “The Unauthorized Rolling Stones” come to Dan's Bar in Walnut Creek…oh happy day! Now is your chance to see Dan in eye liner and tight black pants…oh happy day! But if eye liner and all the accoutrements that fulfill the illusion isn’t your bag then how about this…Saturday afternoon at the Walnut Creek Art on the Main? See and be seen at this once a year event. Everybody who is somebody will be there! Network and/or show off your ostentatious 22 inch rims on that sweet Lexus ride! Or maybe bring the Rangy/Rangie! (Range Rover for the uninformed) Or if that is not your piece of cake…how about Rocco’s where the less than ostentatious go to eat and meet? It’s lots of TVs with nothing but sports-sports-sports! oh happy day! OR…just come on by Pyramid on Sunday afternoon and say hello to Norman “Rock-a-Billy Cowboy” Collins as we do what we do on the outside patio/beer oasis. Until then, Dan Friday 5/18/07 URS at Dan’s Bar in Walnut Creek 9ish to 1ish* Saturday 5/19/07 Walnut Creek Art on the Main 1-2:30 pm Rocco’s in Walnut Creek / Ygnacio and Oak Grove 8:30-11:30 Sunday 5/20/07 Pyramid Brewery with Norman “Rock-a-Billy Cowboy” Collins *ish stand for ish… PS Dan and Channing at an

on Dan’s pants! Filthy things! Also note Channing’s ultra-limbo
posture…ouch! |

This Friday night the Unauthorized Rolling Stones “bring it on” at the Blackthorn Tavern on Irving St and 11th in SF. Should be interesting to play on a stage the size of the old 37 cent postage stamp. Then it’s the return of LUMBERYARD to Dallimonti’s this Saturday. Lot’s of “sit in” guests and Shakers and Movers who have already signed the roster to play. And let’s not forget Mothers Day this Sunday at Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek! Bring your moms down and enjoy the soothing sounds of Dan on one of his rare solo gigs at the Egyptian themed beer patio. (plus special “sit in” guests!) If your musical needs are not met this weekend with The Stones and/or Paul Cotruvo then let me say this: Sunday, May 6th you can see the incomparable DENNIS MUZZY at Pyramid Brewery. I will be in New Orleans visiting relatives and “dropping in” on the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. I have to choose between ZZ Top and The Counting Crows since they both go on at the same time. I guess I have to go with the Crows since I finagled a way onto their guest list. Maybe I can see Billy F Gibbons at the after party. (like I’m going to an after party, ha ha) Let’s get back to DENNIS MUZZY. If you have never seen him or maybe heard the rumors about how many Gordon Lightfoot songs he can do in a row, well now’s your chance to check him out. You won’t be disappointed! I know! I saw him! He rocks! (for an acoustic player…) Friday 4/27/07 URS at Sweetwater in Mill Valley Sunday 4/29/07 Walnut Creek Pyramid Brewery with PAUL COTRUVO 6-9:30 Sunday 5/6/07 Dennis Muzzy at Walnut Creek Pyramid Brewery 6-9:30 |

If you came out last Sunday to show support for live music, well, thanks! We had some heavy hitters “sitting in”. It was a pleasant night out under the stars in which Paul Cotruvo brought along a lot of his “peeps”. It was good…This Sunday with Norman Collins may have some problems with moisture so check in with Pyramid before you venture out. The Unauthorized Rolling Stones finally make it out this way, the East Bay Way that is. Sort of… We play Elie’s in Oakland and Yagers in Folsom where I have a confirmed appearance by one or two of the Pat Eady dynasty. Pat is always good for a chortle, laugh or guffaw. He takes requests for all three… Come on by if you want to see tight pants, eye liner and good renditions of your favorite Stones songs. And maybe, weather permitting, we will see some of you this Sunday. Until then, Dan FRIDAY: Elies Mile High Club 3629 Martin Luther King Jr. Way Oakland, CA www.oaklanmilehigh.com 510.654.4549 SATURDAY: Yagers Tap House & Grill 727 Trader Lane City: Folsom, CA Between Sutter St. & Trader Ln. www.yagers.com SUNDAY: w/ Norman Collins at the Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek 6-9:30 |

As some of you may or may not know, this is the fourth year of music for Dan at the Pyramid on Sundays. Each year Dan tries to up the ante. Last year we had dancing bears and the year before we had pontificating piglets. We are in negotiations with a number of farm animals and people who have “animal husbandry” on their business cards. I can’t make any definite promises but I can assure you of fun, mirth and merriment beyond your wildest dreams. Speaking of wildest dreams…what better way to start of the season than with Pleasant Hill’s own Paul Cotruvo. Yes, the rumors are true, Paul will be “in the house” and the experience will be “off the hook”! Some come on out, make our first day back a huge, raging, undeniable success and show your support for a dying breed: musicians who play live, as opposed to dead, music. Who knows who will show up and “sit in”?!?! Until then, Dan Sunday 4/15/07 Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek with Paul Cotruvo 6-9:30 (weather permitting) 925/946-1520 PS The great Norman Collins on the 22nd |

Treat yourself to a night with Spinout! There’s Matt Tidmarsh on double-bass, Tom “Fingers of Flame” on 1959 Gretsch 6120 guitar, Dan (that’s me) on 1959 Gretsch 6119 guitar and Stewart Burr on drums. It’s a rock-a-billy Elvis-Johnny Cash sort of thing. Drive on out to Fairfax and look for Perri’s on the strip… 4/30/07 9:30-1pm Until then, Dan PS The Pyramid Alehouse in Walnut Creek starts up again on Sunday, April 15th at 6pm. Let’s have another good year and get some songs ready if you are going to “sit in”. |
|
Rocco has let me come back for a gig! He’s gonna make sure I don’t bring down the cops with me this time and has assured me I will not be led away in those embarrassing metal bracelets. (handcuffs) I also assured him I would not climb on top of the strip mall roof and run around playing thrash metal on my wireless guitar. (like last time) We’ll see how I am after six Jagermeisters…(sic) Sat Rocco’s Pizzeria in Walnut Creek on Ygnacio and Oak Grove 8:30-11:30 Unauthorized Rolling Stones next week at: Friday - Last Day Saloon in Santa Rosa Saturday- Rancho Nicasio |

Dan will be in Mill Valley this weekend at Sweetwater as he parlays his new position as the latest in a series of “Keith Richards” doppelgangers to use as a stepping stone for his hidden desire to wear tight (read: very tight) leather trousers along with the other accoutrements that make Keith Keith, i.e. eyeliner, skull ring, hair jell, and the occasional loud scarf. Even the dreaded headband! Why has Dan sunk so low? When seen last, he had a shred of decency hanging off his shirt sleeve…I know - I saw it! And now this! Oh, how the once mighty have fallen…eyeliner! Earrings! What’s next? Parachute pants? See the band, sans Dan at www.theurs.com Until then, Dan PS Happy Belated Valentines Day ! Dan is the “guest guitarist” with Spinout this Thursday night. Lot’s of pickin’ and strummin’ will be the order of the day. Or if you can’t make it out maybe you can catch the guy I’m fillin’ in for, Tom “Fingers of Flame”, at Tiki Tom’s doing his surf thing. Either way you go, you will see and hear a Silver Face Fender Deluxe Reverb being used. Mine was just black-faced by the Fingers of Flame guy. (black what?) So treat yourself to some good, cozy, tube warmth (no pods allowed!) and, of course, drink responsibly… Until then, Dan Thurs 1/25 Fourth Street Tavern 711 4th St., San Rafael 9:30-12:30 |

I, for one, can’t wait to pull into Rocco’s and unleash the fury of sound that I am know for. It’s a little bit sweet and a little bit sour if you are into that sort of thing. Some are and some are not! This has been a subject of much contention between me and my adoring fan base. A lot want it right down the middle, salty-sweet, but I have to stand by my principles and say absolutely not… So come on by and either sit in and sing/play an instrument or watch some TV on the BIG screens! Until then, Dan Sat 1/13 Rocco’s in Walnut Creek 8:30-11:30 |

This will be you LAST time to see the Famous Trio in 2006 so why not have some pasta, pizza, wine, beer and sports TV as we play some music? You can either watch TV and ignore us OR watch us and ignore the TV but really, it’s up to you. (but you can’t do both…) Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and all the rest of the Holiday Homilies. Until then, Dan SAT 12/30 The Famous Trio at Rocco’s Pizzeria in Walnut Creek 8:30-11:30 |

My project band, Lumberyard, has never really lived up to its initial conception and potential. It goes through many different faces and styles but has never reached its fully realized funk-soul-rock sound. One day it will all come together but in the meantime please enjoy Mr Rick Lilley on guitar and vocals. I’m there on bass and vocals. Then there’s Jim Bogious on drums and vocals. I know this seems like a lot of vocals but it’s really not. A lot of vocals would be like the hard rockin band “Cover to Cover” where everyone sings and they have, like, thirteen people on stage. Now that’s, like, a lot of vocals. Until then, Dan Sat 12/16 Lumberyard at Dallimonti’s in Pleasant Hill 9:30 – 1am http://www.dallimontis.com/ |

Some how I worked out a back room deal to get back in Rocco’s good graces and get my foot (and guitar) back in the door at the best pizza palace in the East Bay. It’s fun, it’s educational and there’s lots of TVs turned to your favorite game. Sports and fowl, both… Don’t forget the religious icons filling every bit of wall real estate (Frank and Dino, both..) I’m on a Pink Floyd trip right now but don’t expect any of those multi-instrumental jam sessions to go down next to the cannelloni… Until then, Dan PS The Famous Trio says goodbye to 2006 on Dec 30th at… Rocco’s! Stay tuned for more info. PSPS Lumberyard with me and Rick Lilley and Jim Bogious play Dallimonti’s the 16th. Sat 12/2/06 Rocco’s with Dan solo acoustic |

Oh sure, it’s nice to be back in town after spending eight days in New Orleans eating gumbo, jambalaya, shrimp etoufie, beignets and walking down Bourbon Street in the wee small hours of the night and then picking up a semi-drunk younger brother off the sticky asphalt. Let’s not forget eating home cooked meals in Aunt Millie’s kitchen with the ORIGINAL gas stove and listening to Uncle Santo and Aunt Leona talking trash with my mom. Then 15 year ol’ cousin DJ comes over and sez: “Ya’ll wanna go down to the French “Quawhter” for a while?” Sure enough we are there in a heartbeat listening to ten bands in as many clubs and all for FREE! They even had this thing called “three for one”…you buy one drink and they give you…well I think you figured it out. I was the DD so I only had a half of a “Hurricane” and maybe a Guinness or two. Lots of cousins, aunts, uncles, bowling and fun!!! On a sad note it was strange and surreal to see my grandparents “shotgun house” (you can see the back door from the front door) sort of slumped to the side with the roof hanging on by a thread thanks to Katrina. Whole neighborhoods seemed otherworldly with sunken, slanted and demolished houses surrounded by trash, weeds, puddles of mud and nobody around. Some of my relatives houses were skeletons awaiting new sheet rock and everything else that makes a home a home. Two FEMA trailers were being used as they worked when they could cleaning up and putting in new plumbing and electrical. Makes you think about how good things are here in the Bay Area… Sat 11/4 Dallimonti’s with myself…and whomever else stops by…9:30-12ish |

Huge weekend of High Caliber Music The high caliber does not include me but rather the musicians “on board” this weekend. Let’s do this in a chronological fashion…Saturday we have the ever revolving/evolving band Lumberyard playing at Dallimonti’s. Alan “Big Deal” Thiele on tubs, Tommy “Real Deal” Miller on bottom, Dan “I gotta a fever and the only cure is more Glockenspiel” DeShara (that’s me) on strings and Gary “Man of Steel” King on abstract guitar. Lotsa blues and funky rhythms should be emanating from the small, formerly smoky confines of Dallimonti’s on the strip. Sunday Sunday Sunday! The last gig of the season ay Pyramid and who better to close it out than Tom “Fingers of Flame” Fleming. Who knows what sort of vintage gear Tom will unearth and bring to this highly prestigious venue? Will it be the Selmer? The Magnatone? The classic 1962 Fender Deluxe? Of course! The Supro! No! Perhaps the Betty Crocker 18 watt combo? He won’t tell me so your guess is as good as mine. But this should give you the impetus to show up for a good send off. Hopefully we will have our usual list of guest stars showing up: Channing, Rob G, Kean, Paul Cotruvo, Terri, Toni, Dave McCoulagh (sic), Nickolette, Sonny F, Dick Staff, Dr Dave (not a real doctor), Matt “Too Tall” Tidmarsh, Anthony Millison and whomever else I failed to mention. Until then, Dan Sat 10/21 Dallimonti’s in Pleasant Hill with Lumberyard 9:30–1ish Sun 10/22 Walnut Creek Pyramid Brewery with Tom “Fingers of Flame” Fleming 6-9:30 (74 degrees, or so they say) |

The hard to book, man of one thousand gigs, the one and only Dave “Classic Rock” Kelleher finally makes it to The Pyramid Brewery this Sunday. After years of cajoling and manipulating the system, Dan DeShara will do his first gig ever with “Jam Master DK” who brings with him a pedigree of mystery and theatre productions. I saw him as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar in Dublin. (not the Ireland one!) He rocked the house and stole the show from Jesus! So he’s gotta be good… Make it point to come out and see this very special night where there is certain to be plenty of “social Interaction” (to quote K Cooper) There are only two more Sundays so if I can’t shame some of my “friends” from “far away places” to come by, then I will have to resort to a small cash prize or other incentives. (perhaps the Famous Hooters Bartender vs the Hostesses Chess Club Match?) Until then, Dan Sun 10/15 Pyramid Brewery with Dave Kelleher 6-9:30 (weather permitting) |

The big news is some friends and I are throwing a garage sale this Sat and Sun with loads of cool books, DVDs, CDs, vintage amps and guitars, house stuff, garage stuff, art work for your walls, huge IKEA Wardrobe Closet, and a VERY RARE, hard to find bread-maker! It’s on Danville Blvd at La Serena, one mile south of Stone Valley in Alamo. Look for the balloons and bring cash…! Tonight, Friday, I just got a call to do a gig at TRs in Concord, so come on by and stare at the moose above my head! Sat is the return of The Famous Trio at Dallimonti’s where social interaction is at it’s best! (ask Ken C) Sun will be the last gig with Paul Cotruvo of the 2006 Summer Season at Pyramid. If you haven’t heard Paul sing then you owe to you and your immediate family to check him out. High Energy at it’s best! (Only three more Sundays…hint hint) Until then, Dan Fri 10/6/06 TRs in Concord 8:30-10:30 (only two sets!) Sat 10/7/06 Dallimonti’s with The Famous Trio 9:30-1:00 Sun 10/8/06 The Pyramid Alehouse in Walnut Creek w/ Paul Cotruvo 6-9:30 (weather permitting) |

Greetings! October is “full sail ahead!” We got the word from the higher-ups that, depending on the weather, Sundays will continue on for one more month. So, if you are one of the many who live in, let’s say SF or Sonoma or Pleasanton or any other subdivision with in the Bay Area, you have four more chances, Ken Cooper does the last Sunday, to live up to your promises of coming out to the ‘burbs for some Sunday slo-jams on the patio…and you know who you are!! If not, well, there will be consequences… This Sunday we have Gary King and his guitar wizardry! You won’t believe what comes out of the speakers. It’s difficult to wrap your mind around and you’ll be discussing it ‘round the water cooler Monday morning with your work-mates. And, if you like watching television in a bar, come on down to Rocco’s and watch some of the wicked box while you listen to some backround music performed by your truly. Until then, Dan Sat 9/30 Rocco’s Pizza in Walnut Creek 8:30-11:30 Sun 10/1 Pyramid Brewery with GARY KING 6-9ish |

Firstly, if you showed up last Sunday expecting music, there was a last minute change in plans. Something about a liquor license and loud music and so they pulled the plug! Sorry about that. Speaking of pulling the plug: This may be the last Sunday as they are pulling back the music on the weekdays until next season. We may get a one month extension but don’t cancel any vacation plans (Oktober Fest in Germany, etc.) to see us on Sundays in October. The good news is that Paul Cotruvo is back after a “Sorry Dan, I can’t fit Pyramid into my busy schedule” month of August. So we may be closing out the 2006 season with Paul and the whomever else shows up to sit in, tune up and turn on. Also, I lost my email addresses due to massive hard drive malfunction, so send me your contact info if you wish to remain on the infamous Dan email list. (even though you can’t see this if you aren’t on the list!?...strange!) Until then, Dan Sat 9/23 Rocco’s Pizza with Ken Cooper! 8:30-11:30 Sun 9/24 Walnut Festival at Heather Farms with whomever shows up (not again!) 2-3:30 Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek with Paul Cotruvo 6-9ish |

Paul C is back with his new salute to Green Day: "American Dookie Idiot for Young Lovers", on acoustic guitar and string quartet. I heard it and it sounds dookielicious! Paul will shock and awe! Come early, stay late! I, Dan, will be on the sidelines selling the mandatory t-shirts and sun-visors and cotton-candy-shaped dookie bars and dookie cell phone cards and "i'm with idiot" button down izod cotton/poly blend parkas! (arrow pointing either way, left or right!) You'll have to see it to believe it...so bring the family! Until then, Dan Sun 7/30 Pyramid Brewery (Walnut Creek Style) Dan with Paul "Country" Cotruvo 6-9ish |

It's all about KEN COOPER It may be the stars being in alignment or maybe Zeus tossed a few thunderbolts (tossed: to throw, not as in vomiting) over his left shoulder, not unlike salt, for good luck. But the fact is: Dan has the honor to perform not once but twice with the Undisputed King of Contra Costa County: Mr. Ken Cooper. (also known as the hardest working man in showbiz, sorry Davo, Mike F, Sonny F, etc) How come I get all the luck? Nobody knows and I've asked quite a few...but it is akin to winning Super Lotto times 10 or 11 (maybe 12). So come and see the sparks fly as Ken and Dan quibble over "to Pod or not to Pod". It's all in fun, of course... ALSO: Pyramid Brewery attendants have been in quite an uproar over having to wait for "foxy yet demure" Channing Dahl to show up and sing. A petition is being circulated to ask her employer for Sunday evenings off ad infinitum. Be sure and sign it so we can have this lovely yet humble performer do what she does best: Show up earlier and sing from her catalogue of Broadway show tunes! ALSO ALSO: If you remember The Buzztones and want to see them play together again, maybe renew those wedding vows at the same time, there are a limited amount of tickets available for the evening of Saturday July 29th. $25 bucks includes food. Inquire within for details... Until then, Dan Sat 7/22 Dan with KEN COOPER at Rocco's Pizzeria and Bar 2909 Ygnacio Valley Rd Walnut Creek, CA 94598 (925) 947-6105 8:30-11ish Sun 7/23 Dan with KEN COOPER at Walnut Creek Pyramid Brewery 6-9:30 |

I'm back from a mini vacation in Salt Spring (singular) Island, Canada. It was boring. Nothing to do but hang out at the lake, swim in perfect lake water, throw a football around, drive around a traffic free island, read books, do laundry, watch DVDs at night while eating dim sum and drink alcoholic beverages. It's good to be back in the Bay Area... And now for the highlight: Enchanted Forest in Oregon! Log rides...Haunted House...Ice Mountain Roller Coaster...Water Fountain Magic! And it's all been there since the late 60's so there's lots of "avocado green" and "burnt orange" color schemes. Wicked cool. The Famous Trio is back at Dallimonti's this Saturday night. Alan's new mini-drum set created quite a commotion last time and Ken's new black jeans looked like...well...Ken's new black jeans. This Sunday brings Gary King and his vintage guitar and vintage vocals back to the Pyramid Brewery in the liberal confines of Walnut Creek. The weather should be perfect once the "misters" have their misting effect on the back patio. (shower caps optional) Until then, Dan Sat 7/15 The Famous Trio at Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill 9:30-1 Sun 7/16 Dan and Gary King at the Pyramid Brewery in WC 6-9:30 |

Don't forget to remember to check out Dave and Ken's much talked about gig this Sunday at Pyramid in Walnut Creek. PS Salt Spring Island, BC Canada is splendiferous this time of year. Wish you were here... Also: I received this email from someone named Vivian. "Subject: probably you Do not ignore me please, aI found your email saomewhere and now dbecided to write you. I am coming to your place ina bfew weeks and thought we canb meet each other. Laet me know if you do not minda. I am a nice pretty girl. Don't reply to this email. Email me diraeclty at qs@snail4mail.com" I need some advice on how to proceed. How does she know where I live? What if she's not pretty? Why does she want to meet me? Doesn't she know I already have a bitchen girlfriend and was not raised Mormon? Why can't I reply to her email? Any ideas? This Sunday and Saturday - July 4th Weekend....w/ Dan and Tom I know a lot of you are concerned that next Sunday, the 9th, I will be on vacation and will not be at the WC Pyramid. My message to you is this: Do not be concerned! Ken Cooper and Dave Martin will provide you with the shock and awe that they are known for. If you have never witnessed s&a then you really owe it to yourself to rent or buy a video camera to catch this momentous occasion. Trust me... I will be there this Sunday (see, prayers are answered!) with Tom "Fingers of Flame" Fleming. This should also be momentous because there will be "The Battle of the Ampeg Twin Echo Amplifiers". We will come to you in glorious stereo and the highest of "high fidelity." We may also throw in "The Battle of the Gretsch Guitars" for something extra. And to top it off, we will be recording it for posterity's sake. So, make your handclaps and hoots of encouragement part of history to the stereo over head mics that will be picking up the audiences response. (or lack thereof) This will be mixed down and then compressed, EQ'd, expanded, quantized for your enjoyment. Don't miss this experience! It's not to be missed! Miss not and want not! You'll be wishin' you ain't missin'! (that's enough) PS Watch out for those fireworks! They can catch your hair on fire... Until then, Dan Sat Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill 8:30-12ish Sun Walnut Creek Pyramid Brewery with Tom Fleming (and maybe Matt Tidmarsh on stand-up bass) |

Ken and Dan this SUNDAY at Pyramid 6/25/06 I misspoke egregiously last Sunday when I said, over the microphone, repeatedly, that Ken and DAVE MARTIN, of DMHP, would be there this Sunday. This is untrue! They will be at the Pyramid on July 9th, so mark you calendars and bring or rent a camcorder. If you do, indeed, show up this Sunday looking for the aforementioned duo, I will perform "Rouge and Lipstick" or "Crackin' Me Up", whichever you prefer... Next week is Tom "Fingers of Flame" and then I'm off to the Vancouver area for 14 days (which is when you can catch the Ken and Dave duo!) Until then, Dan Sun Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek w/ Ken Cooper 6-9ish |

Paul "Cover to Cover" Cotruvo joins Dan this Sunday! If that's not enough good news, well here's more. Rocco Biale, formerly of Rocco Records, has been runnin' a great pizza joint over on Ygnacio and Oak Grove for years now. It's called, get this, "Rocco's". Great name I think! And great pizza and other treats. It's also home of the "Hanging Vespa"! See it to believe it... The important thing is now there's been an annexation of sorts. Rocco's now has it's own bar. Yes, and as it's a bar's want to do, there are about 16 or 18 TVs hanging about. (yet none by the Vespa! strange...) Hope to see you there... Sunday with Paul Cotruvo! What a way to spend Father's Day. Maybe "Policeman Matt" will come by with the kids again and show us some photos from camping in Yosemite. Until then, Dan Sat 6/17/06 Rocco's Pizzeria in Walnut Creek (Ygnacio at Oak Grove) 8:30-11ish Sun 6/18/06 Pyramid in Walnut Creek w/ Paul "Cover to Cover" Cotruvo 6-9ish |

Dan's Whereabouts for music and neo-conservative ultra right meanderings Oh sure, many of you did not know that I'm a HUGE Dubya administration fan. He will go down as one of the most memorable presidents ever! Wait and see... If some of you came to the Pyramid two weeks ago and found Ken Cooper in my place, I hope you were nice to him and did not make fun of him. Make fun of him for what you ask? Because he owns the DVD box set for both "Scary Movie" and "Police Academy. As of this moment he is also saving up for "Nightmare on Elm St", of which I say "right on"! Next time you see him ask him any question about plot, dialogue, returning characters, funniest trailers or most gruesome depiction of decapitation (especially Police Academy!) and he will rattle enough info to make your head spin off! (Scary Movie 3) He will be back on July 2 and 9th so mark your calendar. (you too Ken) This Sunday heralds the return of Gary King. His blues based panatonic (sic) guitar fills will make you stand up and shout! Seeing is believing so make sure you bring a camera and/or a full film crew to this once in a lifetime event. (disclaimer: he will be back next month too...) If you want to see how an old pal of mine, Jay Brookston, spends his waking hours then check out his website and settle in for a nice night of reading and sightseeing. http://www.brookston.org/blog/?page_id=21 Until then, Dan Fri TR's in Concord 8:30-12 Sun Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek w/ Gary King |

Sunday Sunday Sunday! If you missed last week then perhaps you read the papers Monday morning. Pyramid Brewery was cited for "unauthorized pyrotechnic display" after a hard to find fire extinguisher was used on Tom "Fingers of Flame" Fleming. Nothing was left of his charred digits but small, translucent wisps of smoke. This made minor chords sound like major chords and visa versa. We used the generous tip money to quiet the officials and Tom was left with a solemn "slow down son, someone may get hurt" warning. If this wasn't bad enough, Matt "Tiny" Tidmarsh walked in though the service elevator in short shorts, sandals and Martini/Luau wear with Double Bass in tow. The fire officials were back for a repeat visit after Matt hit the "low C" on "Folsom Prison Blues". He was led away in cuffs after his "Don't you know who you're messin' with?" remark...Leann was not amused! Channing Dahl was fabulous on her Cheryl Crow/Nancy Sinatra set as well as being HD cinematographer for the entire night. (not as many close ups on Dan next time, please!) See what you're missin' on Sundays? Come out this Sunday for Paul "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" Cotruvo! He has a cousin on the force so don't expect any policen' action. Sunday 5/14 Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek w/ Paul Cotruvo 6-9 PS Look for Ken "King" Cooper the next two Sundays! |

Whole Lotta Ear Candy Goin On Well, maybe not in my case but certainly the sweet sounds of Gary King (Sunday) and Sonny Fitman (Tuesday) can only be thought of as Candy for Ear. Last week's Summer Kick-Off at Pyramid was temporarily derailed when six and one-half year old Natalie froze onstage in a severe case of stage fright and "I don't wanna do this anymore!" (her words, not mine) After I pried the egg shakers from her vise-like grip, (she chose purple and green, which should have been an omen of sorts) her mother placed a wet wash cloth across her forehead and then placed her supine on the front edge of the stage for the remaining 25 minutes of our set. She arose in a Lazarus like fashion and seemed to have no memory of her musical transgression. One hour later Natalie redeemed herself with a rousing rendition of "I Like Candy" performed in style of Bo Diddley. Paul Cotruvo wowed the select audience by singing the aforementioned song as he was enjoying his third jawbreaker of the night. (hence the song selection) This Sunday should be a swell thang for all you guitar aficionado's and Gary King plays his '55 (fitty-five!) Martin and let's us see, hear and feel how good those "out notes" really are. It'll be a gas! Plus he's got a killer vocal style and really long hair. Also there's Sonny Fitman at Groove (the old Abernathy's) in Walnut Creek. He will have a hard act to follow after Clive Evans last week. The crowd was uncontrollable as we segued between Simon and Garfunkel and Abba and then into Led Zeppelin. Even the DJ that follows us was in a semi-catatonic state. Good luck Sonny! Tonight, Friday, I will be back at TR's in lovely downtown Concord. If you go to the Brendan Theatre next door before hand to see a flick, look for the Brendan Theatre "between movie on screen advertisement" of said theatre with Mr. Brendan and "Lady in Red". Must be seen to be believed! (very family oriented) Until then, Dan Friday 4/28/06 TR's in Concord 8:30 -12ish Sunday Pyramid with Gary King 6-9:30 Tuesday Groove in Walnut Creek w/ Sonny Fitman 7-9:30 (all times PM, of course) |

Paul Cotruvo and Dan launch The Pyramid Summer Series (Turbo T sighting!) Sounds special doesn't it? Paul is surely special but it's not really "Summer Series". It's just another summer of fun, mirth and merriment! (weather permitting) So, hopefully we will have the same cast of special, talented guest stars wafting in and out, all while leaving their own unique afterglow with you and yours. Come on by and listen or sit in and play/sing a song or two... Until then, Dan PS Perhaps the infamous "Jazzy J Turbo T" will show up again! Sweet Jesus! Sunday Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek w/ Paul Cotruvo 6-9ish (weather permitting) Tuesday Groove in Walnut Creek on Locust w/ Clive Evans 7-9:30 (call to confirm we are there!?) |

Just in case you did read past the potty humor warning last week...Anna, was and is, a software algorithm, not, as some of you have assumed, a real person I was having a chat with. That's what made it soooo funny, you see! (maybe not...) Some were aghast at my low level attempt at putting out an amusing email whilst others had no idea I was that incredibly funny and could really think of those things on my own without a thesaurus or Life Line. This week brings loads of high-energy low-carb music. Firstly, Ken and Dan return to the GROOVE Lounge! Yeah, everything's a "lounge" these days. "Bars" are so 20th Century! This time we start at 7:00 and get to eat lots of free (50 cent) tacos. You can get thee same deal. (50 cents!) And we get to "get into the groove" at the GROOVE lounge! (see first paragraph referring to humor) And of course what better way to end the week then showing up at Dallimonti's and churning to The Famous Trio. This is different than chooga-loogin', which happened last month. Ken had the pipe (with smokeless tobacco) and Alan sported a fuchsia ascot. ALSO, This Sunday, weather permitting, The Pyramid Brewery starts it summer music series. So come on by after your Easter Celebration and say hello to Ken and Dan as we kick it off with colored lights and a sub-woofer. And "get it on" to the Lava Lamp! Until then, Dan Tues Groove Lounge in Walnut Creek (Locust St and Bonanza) 7-9:30 Sat Dallimonti's with The Famous Trio 9:30-1? Sun The Pyramid Brewery with Ken Cooper 6-9 (weather permitting) |

If you go to IKEA.com you can chat with, Anna, the online assistant, as I did. She seems very nice. If you don't like potty humor, DO NOT read on... Dan: Hi doll face Anna: Welcome to IKEA. It's too difficult for me to give an answer to that one. I'd much prefer to talk about IKEA though. been nice chatting with you, can we do this again? I'm here any time you want to talk. See you later. |

This Saturday The Famous Trio returns to Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill. Alan, the drum hitter, will be trying a new look! When he asks, tell him the ascot looks really mature and worldly. That is what he will be going for so play along. Ken will also be doing a makeover but his will be more obvious. A pipe filled with smoke-less tobacco. Strange but true! This will only add to Ken's stoic charm. I will be trying something I have been waiting to do for a long time. This Saturday I will part my hair...on the other side! I can just see/picture people doing a double/triple take as they walk in and take one look at me. They will say or shout something like, "That Dan is out of control! What a mental case!" Hopefully it will shave months off my age and cause the patrons to murmur amongst themselves. "Where did Dan get his Botox?" Only you and I will know it was just a hair thing... Until then, Dan Sat 3/25 The Famous Trio at Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill 9:30-? (Not later starting time) |
|
The Famous Trio swings it at Dallimonti's this Sat One only has to guess what "swings it" really means. I take it to mean the band in question, TFT, will sway to and fro in a hypnotic manner which, if you squint, can look, to the untrained eye, not unlike a band in full swing. So, come on by and squint away this Saturday. Until then, Dan, Alan and Ken Sat 2/25/06 Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill 9:30-? (not later starting time!) |

Last week was such a success, with all sort of "friends" and "plants in the audience", (means a person or persons who were placed in the audience by the performer and then called upon by the featured performer, in this case me, to come up and do an "unrehearsed/impromptu" presentation, when all along it was, indeed, rehearsed and premeditated, but appeared to the untrained eye, you the audience, to be spontaneous and free-form) And so, we will try and have another Saturday like the one before. Bring your camera 'cause Jim Raines, Sonny Fitman and Rob G. are rumored, (remember, this is only a rumor!) to make an appearance. The rumors are almost true! Dallimonti's has acquiesced and invited me back for more acoustic tidbits. I was thinking of maybe a new stage name for when I play solo and have anywhere from 1 to 13 people sit in. (Rob G this Sat!) I was thinking of "Dan plus Infinity" since who really knows how many will show up and "sit in". (means to have an individual, previously not scheduled, arise from their sitting or standing position in the audience and join in with the scheduled performer for some unrehearsed patter and then playing/singing some songs together, after which the audience is overwhelmed by being in the right place at the right time seeing "magic" happen and rewards the performers with standing ovations and/or cash or check in the form of a tip) Back to the name game: "Dan and Friends" sounds too much like those hair salons in Everytown, USA called "Visions." Why "Visions"? Not sure but there are also a lot of "So and So and Friends." Get my point? So any suggestions will be gratefully acknowledged and appreciated. Just fill in the blank: "Dan and ..." The Famous Trio, featuring Dan (my turn to be featured), will bring it's wide open space sound to Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill. Along with the snappy drums you'll hear tortured vocals, demonic guitar and steady, deep bass. It will be not unlike millions of tiny musical notes vibrating and urging you to let loose. What a way to end the year! I'll be using all three lights (red, green AND amber) for my solo gig at TR's in upscale Concord this Saturday night. Special guests who show up and sit in will receive a Holiday card signed by me (actual signature and not a stamp!) with my special Holiday greeting which I came up with myself. (not a seasonal yuletide stolen from the official Whitehouse Neo-Con Non-Denominational Christmas card!) Mine will be something along the lines of "Hey, don't forget your Aunt who gave you cologne shaped like a chess piece in six, seventh AND eighth grade" or maybe "Practice smiling in the mirror and feigning happiness as you open the package and take out the chess piece". Or maybe I will put in something less personal... In any case, I will be in Phoenix this Holiday Season (used to be called Christmas when I was a kid) so I will not be home to receive any gifts from you. It's true, Dan will bring his stomp boxes and vintage (breakable, undependable tube artifacts) to the family atmosphere of Dallimonti's tonight. He tried in vain to enlist the help of some of his friends but most, if not all, were involved in the practice of husbandry or were otherwise engaged. But one never knows who will wander and and make their way to the bandstand. So, it will be Dan on rare solo acoustic guitar and vocal meanderings unless... See it to believe it! Friday and Saturday for music lovers everywhere Dan plays a once in a lifetime solo performance at the Walnut Creek Pyramid Brewery. (except for last Thursday and maybe once or twice before) The question on everyone's mind(s) is: Who will show up and sit in? It's not about Dan anymore but rather what guest stars will show up and play? There were quite a few (with some obvious omissions) for the last Sunday of the Summer Musical Blow Out Gig. It was even recorded for posterities sake. Also, why does Dan use three lights instead of four? (or two) And what is the significance of red, amber and (ick) green? Is he that patriotic? If so, what country uses those three colors? And what's with the dark beer filled glass he always seems to be holding in a "best man about to toast the groom" position? It looks so gay. And we know, for a fact, he's not. So what's really going on? Find the answers and more this weekend. Until then, Dan (in the third person) PS Will Maura M show up to celebrate her 27th birthday? Tonight w/Sonny Fitman and the LAST Sunday Sonny and Dan have fun doing Beatle songs all night and also doing songs that were never written or performed by the Fab Four, yet doing these songs as though they were. (sound confusing?) That will be happening tonight, Thursday. Also...this week bring sad news :( Not only will tonight be the last night of the Sonny and Dan threepeat, but it will also be the last Sunday of music at the Pyramid. Because of unpredictable weather they will only have music on Frid/Sat. And so, I am hoping we will have a BIG MUSICAL BLOW OUT this Sunday with many guest stars wafting through the musical proceedings. Hopefully Joe Aspatore, Ken Cooper, Sonny Fitman, Matt Tidmarsh, Kean Butterfield, Dave Carter, Dick and Melissa, Clive Evans, Tracy, Dave Martin, Dave McCullough, Tari Smith, Channing Dahl, those Blue Grass kids, Paul Cotruvo!, Camden Doolittle, Alan Thiele, the Fabulous Dan DeShara Egg Shakers, the cool 18 year old guy (Matthew?) who played his originals, Rob- the cool singing chiropractor, Ian from San Jose, anyone of the Hockles would be nice, Ron Dallimonti, Hillbilly Johnny Steele, Kelli Kilshek doing Neal Diamond, Rich Flynn, Larry Lynch, Anthony Millison, and whomever else I left out (!) will show up and lend a hand to this end of an era event. (Ken Quilici?, no, that's to much to ask for :) It has been the MOST exciting time of my musical life this summer to have these friends come out and let me play music with them, so a big thank you to them as it would not have been possible without their support, talent and passion. (I sound almost serious!) Again, thanks to the New Orleans Relief Fund givers, movers and shakers. We did a good thing. Until then, Dan PS I will be checking out BBC (Beatles Tribute Band) Friday at Crown and Anchor in Danville. Sounds like a fab and gear thing... Dan and Sonny Fitman! "raise the roof" tonight at Pyramid Of course that is in the metaphoric sense...as in there is no "roof to raise" cause we play outside under the stars. Just the same, Sonny! will sing any Beatle song within reason and even perform it in the original key. (sacrilegious to do it otherwise) On another note, Dan will play with "The Shills" this Saturday at the "Dewalnuted Walnut Festival" in, of course, Walnut Creek. For some reason Dan is never called to play these festivals as he does not have an "in" and does not sleep with the producers as others obviously do. I still have my dignity intact even though I play birthday parties for 6 year olds wearing a sad clown suit/makeup for $73.00 on Saturday afternoons. (I don't list them in my emails like some others do) I hope you can make it out this weekend and if you are the one having the party this Saturday I lost your phone number and I will be about 20 minutes late as I have a puppet show that I cannot reschedule. Until then, Dan Thursday 9/23 Dan and Sonny Fitman! at the Walnut Creek Pyramid 6-9ish Saturday 9/24 The Shills Walnut Festival (featuring Dan "Chop Shop" DeShara on bass 7-9 (I think, not sure, you'd better check) Sunday 9/25 Dan and Ken Cooper (maybe, as he may have to bow out) at the Walnut Creek Pyramid 6-9ish PS Happy Birthday brother Nick! |

Pyramid End of Summer Tour As the summer comes to a close, Dan finds himself in a triple threat situation. Threat #1: In the spirit of the Kevin Bacon "six degrees of separation" phenom, Dan will finally and justifiably play an entire night with world famous tenor Sonny Fitman. Although they have both moved in the same circles with the same movers and shakers (read K. Cooper) the time has never arisen for the meeting of these two Beatle lovers (read lovers of Beatle music) to do a "gig" together. This Thursday will not be unlike a three hour Beatle fest of the best and worst of the Fab Four. (there's not really any "worst" except for the movie Magical Mystery Tour, a huge misstep) Threat #2: When Joe and I first played the Pyramid in Berkeley, we had four gigs the first month. This month it has dwindled down to one. The threat is obvious, is it not? Threat #3 Will Matt Tidmarsh show up for his unpaid last set gig with Dan and Joe Aspatore? Because of "supposed" exhaustion and a reoccurring case of teenage acne Matt was a no-show last week! (even though there was a question mark next to his name) Herein lies the threat: When Matt shows up and sings the low C, the crowd goes ape. This makes everyone in management happy because of the increased sales of Pyramid beer, food and t-shirts. (some ball caps but clearly not enough to take up space in my email) Ergo - Matt = big dough! So Matt, not wanting to put pressure on you but... your new found WC public needs you this Sunday. See what you can do... Oh yeah, after listening to Sgt Pepper a certain "twenty something" remarked (and I quote) "Now I know how many "ho's" it takes to fill the Albert Hall" I consider that extremely amusing.... Until then, Dan Thursday 9/15 Dan and SONNY FITMAN play the Walnut Creek Pyramid Brewery 6-9:30 (Channing Dahl will sing!) Saturday 9/17 Dan and Joe play the Berkeley Pyramid Brewery 6-9 (Krickie may sing!) stick around for movie in the parking lot! Sunday 9/18 Dan and Joe play the Walnut Creek Pyramid Brewery 6-9:30 two in a row with Rockin' Joe! (Matt Tidmarsh?) |

New Orleans. I was born there at 3232 Music Street on May 4th. I have lot's a relatives on my dad's side there and I want to do something to help the people who live there. And so I will be donating the money from my next three gigs and all tips to the Red Cross in New Orleans for direct aid for the people who are suffering there right now. If you feel like you would like to contribute, please stop by and drop whatever you can afford into the New Orleans relief fund basket I will have set up and I will send it off Monday morning. I will let everyone know how much we raised to help out our brothers and sisters in Louisiana. Ken Q and Stephanie B have matched my donation of the proceeds from my three gigs this weekend. Very generous people they are, as well as Sheila and Paul and Marty and Laurann and Alan T as well. Much heartfelt thanks. Dan PS I really was born at 3232 Music St and my friend Alan G was born one year later on Melody St. in the Big Easy, New Orleans. There has been a surge of generosity towards the New Orleans Relief Fund that was started last week. Here's the new bit: We now have a contributor who will match any money we can come up with. So, if you have already made a contribution, it has, in effect, been doubled. Lucky us for this benefactor... You can still send me money via Paypal.com through deshara@pipeline.com or email me for my address if you want to send a check. Or, of course, you may come by and see us at our gigs and see the New Orleans Relief Fund box as it grows with much needed funds for those suffering in the southern part of our United Stated of America. Remember, anything you can spare will be doubled! Thanks for your help, Sincerely, Dan DeShara |

Things are slowing down as I have only two gigs this weekend. Tonight, Friday I will be at Bimbo's in SF showing my support for Matt Tidmarsh and Super Diamond. He really needs my support as Super Diamond is having a hard go of it these days. Things are slowing down for ol' Diamond. They are only playing seven days a week, one show per day. The dot com bust has also affected them and I think I need to be there for Matt and his band. I can't go Saturday (see below) and I already emailed all the band members so they will be aware of my non-presence. This way they can work through it individually before the show and each can deal with it in their own way (hopefully) I explained how I could not be in two places at once and how much The Famous Trio also needs me and please find it in their collective hearts to forgive and (hopefully) forget. Now, to much more important matters: Movies and popcorn. I went to see Werner Herzog's latest movie, a documentary about a man who studies grizzly bears. (Grizzly Man) I sat down in the front of the theatre on the right side near the middle isle and made myself comfortable. Then some big grizzly guy, beard very, very apparent, sat down on the left side in the same row as me! So now I had some bearded person in my peripheral vision distracting me. I took seven breaths and tried to calm down, reminding myself that everyone has a right to sit down in any seat, after all these are general admission tickets. No sooner had I finished with my seventh breath when a women sat down behind me three seats to my right. This woman had the unmitigated gall to start unwrapping objects that were seemingly covered in bubble wrap and grey duck tape (I'm assuming the color) What was her major malfunction? Movie houses should be thought of as sacred places of silence and personal solitude. (even in a group) And so I proceeded to take fourteen breaths, all the while waiting for her to finally be aware of her own disgraceful behavior and stop whatever she was doing. My "mind thought projection" technique I had learned at the Best Western Tundra Suite in the summer of 1993 must have finally paid off as she abruptly stopped and I was enveloped in complete and utter silence. (except for the HORRID behind the scenes trailer for "The Dukes of Hazard") No sooner had I congratulated myself for the well spent money I paid to the front desk of Best Western (approx $367.45) then this women started in eating her popcorn. But, and get this, her mouth was completely OPEN! The sound of freshly popped kernels of corn being masticated by this open mouthed woman was completely unacceptable. I sat there in utter and total disbelief. And we were still only at the trailers! I tried projecting more unspeakable thoughts in her general direction but she chewed away! I looked left and saw my bearded friend sitting there completely oblivious to her disgusting actions. What was his problem??? I could feel my eyes starting to turn blood red and threaten to explode. As calmly as I could I rose steadily from my seat and took my own popcorn and trusty root beer and found a less favorable seat against the wall on the left side of the theatre and away from my two tormentors. In closing, if you were that chewing, oblivious open-mouthed woman, please don't go see the same movie as me. Next time you'll see the "business end" of the ushers flashlight in your face as he escorts you out of the theatre and into the harsh world of common, decent courtesy! Until then, Dan PS Happy Birthday Mom! Here, there and everywhere This weekend continues Dan's hurricane like path though Dallimonti's Italian Food Eatery. Not only will the soup cistern be overflowing with nutritional goodness, but if you look hard enough you will find a chunk of real, aged hard cheddar where the shredded parmesan should be. If found, Ron and Christie will sing an old Italian farmhand song that has been handed down through the ages in perfect two part harmony and then dance the :"wine maker's dance" to the amusement of all. Good luck to you, the cheese finder! On another note: My subtle, but facetious, tale of drinking in excess found in last week's email was taken quite seriously by Angie. She says the following: (I quote) "I some of my very best friends are alcoholics...but... you don't sound quite what I had in mind for Kiyoe! ;) No hard feelings , I hope." This was in response to finding a boyfriend for her Japanese roommate. I did not make the cut... Four in a row.. It could be anything in a row but I choose gigs for now. Just last year I chose four shots in a row. I usually can handle 12 shots in row as long as they are cut from the same bolt of cloth, so to speak. But these were all from different molecular entities and I suffered drastically. The first shot was some sort of Peruvian liqueur that had been distilled from a tuber of some sort. Not very tasty but had a nice finish. The next shot was similar (in that it was tuber like) but really more of a root if the truth be told. Of New Guinea extraction. Bad beginning and finish. The third was an old favorite from the Czech Republic: Bekarovka! Herb like and medicinal in nature but made me feel slightly green. (not unlike it's own pale greenness) The kicker was the Arak from Singapore. They don't call it the "Arak Attack" for nothing. This really was the "Smack Down" that put me under the table and over the porcelain. The effect of all four taken together was hallucinatory in nature and all most made me "get some religion". (was already raised Lutheran so I opted out) This brings up a great story! Just last Saturday, after a successful Dan and Matt gig at Dallimonti's (with tons of special guests, Clive, Sonny Fitman, Paul on sax) I went to Matt's for an after gig aperitif. It was going fine until the lovely Leann accused me, in front of everyone, of throwing my shot of expensive Tequila into one of Matt's small Fichus trees. The nerve! After about eleven rounds of "did not/did too" I finally ashamedly confessed. I was only trying to save myself from another passed out night on Matt's cold, tile bathroom floor. (see one of last July's emails) But under fierce peer pressure I went to the kitchen and did the proper shot and promised never to water one of Matt's trees again. So back to the four gigs in a row... The "DREAM WEEKEND" with Dan You could, of course, substitute "NIGHTMARE" if you had that frame of mind but let us go with "DREAM" for now. What would constitute a "DREAM WEEKEND"? In my book it would center around a movie + popcorn + root beer and a Nathan's hotdog. The movie would have to be intellectually challenging without being didactic. The new Jessica Simpson movie just may meet my stringent standards. I have great faith in her but it's the other two actors that worry me. Will they try and out-thespian her but inserting sly "blink and you'll miss them" Shakespearian soliloquies? Or will the souped-up car take center stage in this weeks latest attempt at a summer block-buster? How much material will actually be on her (Daisy) person? Will it be denim and lace? Maybe leather and band-aids...perhaps only a splash of Channel #5 will do...What ever she may or may not wear doesn't really matter now does it? I will be there strictly to cheer her and their hillbilly antics as they evade the law and create general chaos and mayhem. ("Dream Weekend" ends here) That sounds pretty good! Sat 8/6 Dallimonti's with Big Matt Tidmarsh on double bass 9-1 Sun 8/7 Pyramid Brewery Walnut Creek with Tom "Fingers of Flame" Fleming 6-9 Mon 8/8 Hilton w/ Rockin Joe Aspatore 5-8 (as per Joe) Joe & Dan make their corporate debut at the newly renovated Hilton hotel in posh downtown Concord. Now we have a wonderful family environment with The Elephant Grill, Krispy Kreme and Claim Jumper. Whereaboutsandothermusings... I'll start at the end, which in this case, is next Tuesday. On this particular date I will be in Fairfax with the group "Spinout" at Perri's. It seems the trio that was is now a quartet and needs to fill three hours with the sound of rock-a-billy lullabies. What's in it for me? Well, I get to hang out with important and semi-important people and let's not forget the free soda pop and cold cuts. If my prayers are answered there will be a crock pot filled with macaroni and cheese (hopefully with salt and pepper to taste) Three sets of swingin' songs sounds like it is worth the drive for all you road hogs out there. If you have been out on Sundays you will have seen Mr. Matt Tidmarsh and his huge instrument which he will have in full view on Tuesday. You never see black ones like that but it sounds good and has plenty of low end. Must have been expensive! PLUS: Joe and Dan return to TR's on Saturday and then it's the Ken and Dan's Dog and Pony show on Sunday. I'll be flying solo on Friday but one never knows who will show up and fill the empty slot for some spontaneous combustion. J. Lopez and Alli? Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps... How does one do three gigs in a row? The answer? Simple...just show up and do not, under any circumstances, let "them" know you are on a week long bender. If you shield your bloodshot eyeballs with the latest fashion accessory, (sunglasses, low slung cap, full face tinted sneeze guard) "they" will be none the wiser. Try your hardest to remember the correct words, chords and let's not forget which key the song is in. If you do as little talking over the microphone as possible and stay away from the sibilant sss sound, things should work out just fine. On another note, I did find a pair of corduroy pants at the Ashby Flea Market but they are the less desirable wide-whale cords and not the coveted thin persuasion. Also, they came in a earthy, primordial ooze color that does nothing for my skin tone. The search continues!!! Until then, Dan (the following is all Ken Cooper) Friday:

Dan is everywhere and nowhere this weekend. Sure, he's playing music and having fun but his life is going nowhere fast. Maybe there's some mellow morning moments with a good, hot cup of rich, satisfying coffee and a maple scone, but that's about it. What happened to all the fireworks? Why hasn't Bobby DeNiro put out a great movie in more than fifteen years? Why can't I buy a new pair of corduroys anywhere? When's the new season of Ali G? This Sunday should be a blast as Matt Tidmarsh will bring his big, lonesome stand up bass for full set sit in at Pyramid. Also, Dallimonti's is back with live music and The Famous Trio is opening the new season with seasoned rock and new wave classics. Remember The Thompson Twins? (really three people) Well we have swallowed our collective pride and since Ken pulled the short straw, you can hear Ken belt out "Hold Me Know". Alan applies the falsetto part as I try my hands on marimba. See you there... Just in case you decided to take a personal stand against rising oil prices and stay home this holiday weekend instead of driving your fossil burning vehicle far, far away and contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer which is a good thing as long as you look at the jobs it gives to the people in Australia who manufacture and sell sunscreen, I have the perfect solution to the staying home doldrums. Come to where rational, unbiased, clean-living and soft-spoken people hang out with their disposable income: Pyramid Alehouse and Brewery/Eatery. Fine food and soothing suds. My personal fave is the Apricot Ale which, come on really, sounds sort of effeminate. But since I am 100% male (and then some) I have no problem ordering this tasty imbibement over the public address system (called "PA" in the biz) and downing some 6 or 7 as I play my inebriated heart out for you, my attentive public. CAUTION! Non-sequitur moment ahead...where does the term "stud muffin" originate? I've heard it a lot lately. Anyway...let's hope Tom "Fingers of Flame" Fleming (note: NOT fingers of flem!) will be sawing away at one of his fancy, vintage axes this Sunday and Ken Cooper is expected to perform his "Honest Abe" soliloquy this Monday at our July 4th celebration in full Lincoln attire. (top hat and wart) Hope to see you there. Until then, Dan PS I'll be seeing War of the Worlds w/ birthday girl Susan Haskett Friday and if Tom Cruise says even one word about Scientology, I will ask for a full refund of my money, even if the movie is 96% over. Susan can stay for the ending if she wants... Sunday Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek 6-9 (pm) Monday Same as above but note new time 4-7 (pm) this way there's time to catch fireworks! |

Dan has the honor of playing "acoustic high energy rock-n-roll" with two of the East Bay's most notable luminaries. Joe Aspatore and Ken Cooper. They appear to be almost the same height but the similarities stop there. One is tall, dark and broodingly handsome and the other is tall, light and broodingly handsome. The fun part is for you, the reader, to figure out who is who. Hint: One of these musical maniacs rides a motorcycle (with Hush Puppy motorcycle boots) and the other goes to bed late wearing same HP boots and, shock!, gets up late! We'll have the answer in next weeks missive. By the way, if you want to leave the overall snarl of the Bay Area I would suggest Dan's vacation spot he visited last week. The magical island of Salt Spring, BC! Those Canadians are a wickedly cool and reserved group of people and they seem to feel the same way about Bush as I do. (?) So, if you can, move there and invite me to stay with you. Friday is the day that Joe and Dan bring their magic, which is to the exclusion of all other forms of magic, to the Pyramid Brewery in Berkeley! Somehow they got our names and invited us to kick off their musical venture into the summer of 2005. We will bring our 5000 watt system because we are, naturally, known for being the loudest acoustic duo in modern recorded history. This is before actual "recordings" were ever made. (see Edison) In addition to the debut of music at a new venue for us (and them) Joe will be debuting his new Gibson Koa J200 guitar (acoustic of course) It will be a rare treat whence upon we begin the Who medley. (yes, P. Townsend plays one) There seems to be a lot of debuts going on, perhaps we should call the Cotillion people and have a couple of post-teens show up. Sunday I will be back at the Pyramid in Walnut Creek with Tom "Flaming Fingers" Fleming. We start late because of some party or something of that nature. How rude! What about the hordes that show up precisely at six to hear our first chord being wrung? What if we can't reach them all concerning this anomaly of a time change? Who will be accountable? Have we no civility? No common decency? When I was a kid....What it's really ALL ABOUT is what guitar will Tom show up with? So many to choose from and so little time. Will it be the 1956 Grestch Country Club? (sounds very Republican) Or maybe the Danelectro Dual Lipstick Tube Pick-up solid body? You and I will be equally surprised! (will he play lead solos over my leads solos? I think not!)
More questions: Will Matt T show up and sing more Elvis? Will Allison show up in Berkeley with cronies in tow? Will Paul C hold out on those loooooong harmonies? Until then, Dan Friday Pyramid Brewery in Berkeley 7-10:30 http://www.pyramidbrew.com/alehouses/berkeley.php Sunday Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek 8-11 (note new time!) |

After three weather related cancellations, Ken finally joins Dan for what will promise to be an engaging evening under the stars. Sure, Ken and Dan get along OK but will Ken continue to play over Dan's sparse lead passages with his own "patent applied for" rhythm/solotechnique? Will Ken ever "get it"? Will Dan ever stop needling Ken? Will Dan stop coloring outside the lines? All these and more questions will be answered this Sunday as Ken takes questions from the audience! Until then, Dan Sunday (as per Ken)

Things are swinging at the Pyramid Breweries. Now, as summer approaches, the Berkeley Pyramid will bring music to it's quaint, intimate "beer garden". Now people such as Allison and J. Lopez will have no excuse to not show up for hops and yeast. The "culture stop tunnel" will no longer impede these like minded folks. So look for Joe A and Dan to start things off June 3rd in Berkeley. What else is going on these days? Dion's 65 Falcon is on the road finally! What's with the leaky master cylinder? There will be lots of fun to be had with Ken Cooper and his wacky antics. Not as much fun as Pat Eady forcing shots of one part motor oil, one part vermouth and one part Jim Beam upon my person with Chris Eady begging Pat to go easy on me. But with 52 big boys in the tip jar and lots of poker debt, Dan was forced to do what he had to do. (2.5 aspirin and one liter of Evian alleviated the morning yuck-fest) Hope to see you there, Dan |

Don't forget to remember: Sundays start in April at the Pyramid Brewing Company on Locust in Walnut Creek. Tom Fleming starts if off with his flaming, incendiary (redundant, yes?) guitar prowess. Then Ken Cooper, Joe Aspatore and Paul Cotruvo fit in the scheme of things some where down the line. I'll keep you posted. Happy Easter to some of you and for the others have a pleasant Sunday. Until then, Dan PS If you can't make it to Port Costa on Saturday then go and enjoy Clive Evans on Friday. Sat Bull Valley Inn / Port Costa 8-11 |

Last Sunday was "standing room only" after my plead for help to make our first Sunday a successful endeavor. My constituents come from all over, even Mill Valley, to show their support and appreciation of live music. (albeit cover songs) Oh sure, there were a few no-shows but they had their reasons I suppose... They missed our special guests and even a tot or two played the multi colored shakers eggs. YES, a brewery that welcomes kids of all ages. In the future I see more and more surprise guests like maybe... Terry or maybe...Clive or maybe an entire evening with Paul Cotruvo. If I were to confirm such speculations, the element of surprise would be non-existent and so I will not. (speculate that is) This weekend Joe and I will "bring it on" at the fan-tabulous TRs in Concord. Then Mr. Music (Ken Cooper) will bring his sassy self to the Pyramid on Sunday. Look forward to Tom Fleming on May 1st. He uses all his fingers...thumbs too. As some of you may or may not know, this Sunday is the opening day for music, in all it's different forms and sounds, at the Pyramid Brewery in downtown Walnut Creek. Located on Locust at Cypress, across the street from Chillis (sic), it has the advantage of being in the bustling hub of activity we call "The Creek". Some of you may recall the balmy late afternoons we all spent together last year playing and listening to the sounds of summer. Eating too... Well, the sounds are back and this week it's Joe Aspatore who steps in to play and sing the songs he knows as only he can sing them! Then it's Ken Cooper for the next two Sundays. Starting May 1st, Mr. Tom Fleming will be sitting to my left singing the songs he knows as only he can sing them. Will Paul Cotruvo be in the line up? Let's hope so! Maybe Dave "Davo" Martin will make a surprise visit every now and then. PART TWO: So here's the deal...we need a good showing this Sunday so as to make the owners happy and glad that they re-upped our contract. That means you and yours would be most welcome and appreciated at this exciting, vibrant, color-coded venue. There will even be prizes for answering the trivia questions Joe and I will be asking (over the microphone, of course) In closing, we hope to see you there this Sunday so we don't get fired. (the preceding sentence is not a guilt trip) Until then, Dan PS Call first if weather is questionable! Even though there are space heaters, dress warmly... Ken Cooper, after much hinting, has invited Dan to share the stage under the moosehead tonight at TR's. This should be interesting if only for the fact that a dead moosehead has a resonant frequency of 375h @ 3db. This can, and does, mean trouble when trying to "ring out" the system. Monitors become almost inaudible, mains blurry and ill-defined and last but not least the moosehead will resonate uncontrollably and emit either a high pitched squeal or a noxious odor. Sometimes both which can clear a room faster than "Edelweiss" sung in Spanish. So if you are tired of the gloomy weather and need cheering up, mosey (sic) on down to the fabulous TR's restaurant and bar. As my musical "career" ebbs slowly forward, the forces that be steer me farther and farther away. Tonight I'll be in the far away land of Port Costa, where there is only one street. It's either First St or Main St, but does this really matter? What really matters is that it exists and I will be there playing the songs I love to the music lovers in attendance. Is the wah-wah pedal really meant for the acoustic guitar? It is where I come from. It's soothing, seductive sound urges women of all ages to sashay up to the bandstand for some one-on-one strong eye contact with the pedal operartor. Since deep, meaningful eye contact is the death knell for any working musician, I will have no other choice than to look away after a glance or two into the woman (or womens) eye (or eyes). She will, after getting the unspoken hint, slink back to her seat to perhaps fantasize about what might have been. "If only he was not a musician!" Even this thought may find it's way into her reeling brain pan: "I never knew how much I truly loved the wah-wah!" and/or simply: "I love you wah-wah!" So, in closing, this woman (or women) can learn to love the wah-wah from a distance and find true fulfillment in the slow, steady and deep (real depth here!) and wide sensation of the often misunderstood wah-wah pedal... First of all it's nice to be back "out there" doing what my guidance counselor in high school thought would be a good thing for me to pursue. Namely, pick a job that pays EXACTLY the same as it did 20 years ago. Is there anybody out there that has a job like this? If I would have continued as a ditch digger, my wages would have escalated as compared to being a "musician". Could I have made a more ill-fated decision? Oh sure, there was free beer and bar snacks for a while. And let's not forget the girls who passed you by for the "cuter" guy in the band. And I quote: "I like you Dan, but not that way..." So it's with great pleasure that I pull my wagon up to TR's in Concord for another night of beer, bar snacks and tips. By the way, if there are any aspiring bass players out there I know a certain someone who is selling a COPY of the famous Hofner Beatle Bass. It has all four strings, a tobacco sunburst finish and sounds like the real thing. Made by Crest, it has a bolt on neck and there's no case. That's why it's only $200.00. Perhaps you saw a certain someone playing the bass in question with The Famous Trio... Before is it goes on Ebay or Craigslist.com I thought I would mention it here. See you all tonight! PS Please get there early because advance ticket sales show SRO. (standing room only) (duh!) Friday 2/18 TR's in Concord 8:30-11:30 |

If you can persuade the bouncer to let you cross through the velvet ropes into a very crowded TR's, you will witness Joe and Dan's last public gig for 2004. What a year it was! Dan grew his hair out to relive part of his youth (didn't work) and now has recently been Delilahed. (think Samson) Whilst I feel no need to recap the past year's events, I do feel a need to thank those of you who trudged through the snow and the heat, waited in lines much too long, traded bootlegged tapes of past live performances that were unsanctioned by Joe or myself, and then were subjected to Dan's wah-wah pedal on acoustic guitar! It's true! Joe and Dan have ended their
months of feuding when it was discovered that Dan wore lifts to achieve
his height advantage over the naturally tall Joe. Dan, whose face is red
getting redder, admits now that because of inbreeding and his own
inferiority complex, he wore lifts to make himself seem bigger and
taller, which women like and thus leads to offers of breeding (not the
in kind) for fun, not for procreation. Speaking off the record, a doctor
(Kaiser) found Dan covered in cobwebs, especially the tools used for
breeding. Since the height advantage was no longer gained by the lifts
secretly hidden in Dan's tasseled golf shoes, as evidenced by the almost
impenetrable cobweb mass covering his privates, Dan has dropped the
pretense and has learned to live with his shorter, and no longer a safe
haven for spiders shelter, self.

one measly gig... Dear readers, Let's recap, shall we? To think that the modern, critical thinking individual is not familiar with re-animated tree bark begs the question: Have you been living in a cave? It's the next best thing to non-cognitive neuro-science! If we could harness the energy from common house hold tree bark, we would no longer have to impose ourselves on nations/people who have natural resources that we freedom-loving Americans deserve! You would think the following would you not? Here it is: Say you're a nation who covets freedom. Freedom rules dude! And you have something those freedom lovers love! Like copper or just one of many sodium sulfates. Seriously though, nothing beckons to the freedom lovers heart like OIL! Ergo, if you, the nation of freedom deprived peoples give the freedom lovers oil and/or other natural resources, these benevolent freedom lovers will invade and/or occupy your land and spread equal amounts of freedom for every barrel and/or ton of natural resources taken. It's a win-win situation! So now, back to re-animated tree bark. Write your congress-person (PC) and illuminate them with your internet supplied knowledge of bark and it's many uses. Chair a committee! Work from home selling bark and earn 300-500 per day! It's no lie! Until then, Dan Go Kerry! (he's for tree bark!) Music plus Benicia John Kerry Rally Dan, it appears, is sticking his neck out to play for a John Kerry rally this Saturday in Benicia. This swaying to the liberal left from Dan's ultra conservative middle will surprise and infuriate his loyal fanbase and mildly amuse others. (not in fanbase) The reason behind this radical shift is the fact that John Kerry and Ronnie James Dio share certain philosophical views on tree bark re-animation. This wildly contested practice promises more tree bark for everyone which will mean tree bark fueled vehicles are just around the corner. If we, (John, Ronnie and myself), could just agree to agree on this highly volatile issue, which by the way, is dividing states, fathers-sons, brothers-sisters, etc, etc, I believe "W" is going to be working in a stockyard come Jan 12. (+/- three days) So up with re-animated tree bark and down with "W"! PS Ronnie James Dio is at least 5"3' and does not wear a cape to the grocery store, only on stage! Music is the language of love... Ronnie James Dio style Who ever said "Music is the language of love" was not aware of the musical contributions of Ronnie James Dio. RJD basically sings about conquests. Either it is the successful taking of a young fair maiden's much sought after virginity, which he then discards like an empty Mateus wine bottle (as told in song) and rides off on his "stallion" with out so much as a kiss or it is some battle with a beast from the Netherworld. This beast, for one reason or the other, selfishly wants our hero's (RJD) blood which is then used to satisfy it's own unholy blood-lust. (and I thought the Internet was weird) Ronnie then pulls out his sword (how appropriately phallic!) and slays the beast, if only to save his blood from being vacated from it's container and bringing on his own untimely death! If that's not proof enough, what about that song about diving? Why would he sing about a diver, holy or unholy? It's not very sexy or romantic unless, of course, it's a metaphor and then it's wicked cool... Why Ronnie has not received his due from the Top Forty warlords or the Emmy contingency is beyond my sense of American Justice! "Labor Day Musical Weekend" is such a lame and weak subject matter that I would not blame you for not opening this email. You would think that someone with a high school education could do better... First of all, sorry I could not respond to the all your emails (a virtual flurry) about last weeks lengthy missive. Yes, it's all true and no, I'm not an idiot. (see above) Some of you liked the twisted, convoluted ending and some of you seemed hurt and confused (a bit dismayed perhaps) and felt the ending needed more of a Jerry Bruckheimeresque explosive finish. Dear readers, Dan can be found at Meenar in Danville Tues night although by the time you read this, it will be too late! He's been a little preoccupied as of late. Why? Well here's why: Three months ago he wrote to movie critic/reviewer Mick LaSalle at the Chronicle. The following is what he put in the email. Mick, My question would be this: Countless number of times I read negative reviews by your paper and others in which the movie in question is rightfully slammed for being the lowly piece of dung that it is. Yet as I turn the page and peruse the advertisement for the movie, it is surrounded by positive, GLOWING reviews by people I have never, ever heard of from papers, magazines and TV shows I have never ever heard of. (well maybe some) What's the deal Mick? No shame? Any port in a storm? Payola? Bad movie critic schooling? Dan in Alamo PS How about an article on Wallace Beery? (No answer in the Pink section for two and one half months, so I bug him again and also ask him if he's seen one of my Top Ten movies "Bedazzled") Dan, I still have the question. Since it's not time sensitive, I keep it for when it fits the space. Don't know anything BEDAZZLED. Actually, I don't think I've ever heard of it. Mick Mick, I find it hard to believe that a man of your seemingly immense knowledge of film has not seen the Peter Cooke Dudley Moore masterpiece Bedazzled. Ask my friend at the Chron Stacy Martin, she's seen it I'm sure! The movie does sink into silliness at times but the truly humorous incidents, like when he's lying on his back talking to Eleanor Bron from HELP!, are bits of sublime film humor that is not to be matched by anything anywhere! (excuse my exclamations but this is serious stuff) Since, for the most part, I agree and like your biting, sarcastic and well thought out film reviews, I can almost guarantee this will be one of your favorites. (that is if you like British humor) My advice: RUN, DON'T WALK to Le Video and watch it tonight! (send me the bill on Paypal) Or come out to Alamo by Walnut Creek with your wife (I think you're married?) and we can all sit and watch it, then have a few social drinks and discuss... (Stacy can vouch for me, heck she can even come too!) Hope this wasn't TMI (too much information) Dan in Alamo (One more month goes by, no answer! He's thinks I'm a weirdo...) FINALLY! This is what they put in the Pink Section! Not at all what I wrote! Dear Mick: Countless times I read reviews in which a movie is slammed. Yet as I peruse the advertisement for the movie, it is surrounded by positive, glowing reviews by people I have never heard of from papers, magazines and TV shows I have never heard of. Dan DeShara, Alamo Dear Dan: Those are real people. Most of them are freelancers whose livings depend on access to stars and invitations to press junkets. So if they don't make nice, they're cut off and have to go back to working for a living. Under such circumstances, you can imagine that they want to like every movie. They probably convince themselves that they genuinely do. Still, it's hard to imagine any form of labor more useless and spiritually degrading than having to go to press junkets, week after week. I mean, if you work cleaning out spittoons for a living, at least at the end of the workday you have a lot of clean, shiny spittoons to look at. Whereas if you work at press junkets, you are the spittoon -- and you have to pretend to love it, too. Mick, Thanks for putting my query in the Pink. Although you re-worded some of my very charming and, shall I say, inventive verbiage, twas nice to see my question in print and sort of answered. But there was no cynical humor (your forte) in the answer, which do believe I set you up for. Is it because of your possible association with some of these never before heard of movie critics? PS have you seen BEDAZZLED yet? Dan in Alamo Dan I thought the contrast between cleaning spittoons and BEING a spittoon was worth at least a mild chuckle. Maybe not. I don't know any of these critics. Definitely not by name -- and since I don't do interviews anymore (thank God), which means I don't go to junkets anymore, not by face, either. MICK Mick, Actually, the spittoons was very funny, so I stand corrected. I wrote that after only one cup o' joe. But seriously, how about Bedazzled? Do you not like the Dudley Moore/Peter Cooke wit? Dan PS you're doing a great job at the chron. one of my highlights, along with don asmussan Dan, I haven't seen BEDAZZLED. But I guess I should, huh? Mick Mick, In answer to your ?...YES! Do you know Stacy Martin at the Chron? She can vouch for me as a fairly decent sort of chap. Bedazzled is in my TOP 20 along with Dr Strangelove, Paths of Glory, Before/After Sunrise, Enter Laughing, Koyansquatsi (sic), Trouble In Paradise, Midnight Run, etc... Don't mean to be a pest Mick, just surprised a man of your caliber hasn't seen it. Perhaps you'll detest it and in turn detest me for practically begging you to watch it. Let's hope not! Signed Dan the Pest in Alamo PS I usually 90% +/- 1 agree with your reviews almost to the tee (t?) if that means anything at all. Like I said in an earlier email, I'll gladly refund your rental fee if you are dissatisfied in any way... PSPS Come to think of it I did not agree with your glowing review of CHERISH by Finn Taylor. (Mick answers that he's going on vacation and will DEFINITELY see "Bedazzled"! I'll keep you informed) Hope this was worth it to the ones that made the journey to this point. This was mostly cutting and pasting so it's not really my "longest email ever" Tues Meenar in Danville 8-12 Sat Bull Valley Inn at PORT COSTA 8:30 -11 SUN AWAY CAMPING (Ken and Dan at Pyramid on Sept 1st) |

First of all, thank you to the ones who came out for the Sunset Series with the Delta Dogs on Sunday. This is rent week so your checks have been mailed but, sorry to say, post dated. Signed pictures of Dan with guitar are now available. But now, on to more important things! This Sunday is a "not to be missed" event. Former LLOYDS/Buzztone guitarist Dave Martin (namesake of the "high energy" Dave Martin's House Party) has finally signed the legal papers and cleared the way for us to do our FIRST EVER duo acoustic engagement. (not a typo) You, if you choose to attend, can say, with a very loud, reassuring voice: "I was there! You can hear/see my hoots, hollers, hog calls, clapping, gasping, inconsiderate coughing and out of tune singing on the DVD and/or music CD!" Yet more of Dan's Where-abouts... This weekend is shaping up nicely. Not only has Ken Cooper gone through the list of bass players to fill in this Friday and finally come to my name, but, we are, as of this moment without a drummer too! So, we put out an APB for available drummers and we have yet to procure one...so you will be just as surprised as us when the 9:30 start time rolls around at Meenars. Speaking of Meenars, I got nary a peep from the Danville cognoscenti regarding last week's missive. Either one of two things is true: Like the fact everyone knows, without question, that George W is an idiot, everyone also knows the Danville elite is, well, on the snooty novo riche side. I mean why else would they seemingly ALL drive around in "Gold Package" Lexus's and the ubiquitous conspicuous consumption HUMMER? Who is that HUMMER driving Danville woman with the longest nails in the world and what is she trying to say exactly? Is it deeply Freudian or just plain "Hey Everyone! - look at me" behavior? We know the men's reason: Penis Compensation! But we would a women drive one? Female empowerment? Goes with the augmentation? Anyone? I'm at a loss... Dan's Musical Where-abouts Lying in bed last night, and moments after applying my Sonic Care, I was disrupted from my book by the ringing of a distant phone. It was a certain AskMePenny, inquirering about my whereabouts at that moment. Evidently, I was supposed to be holding up my end of the bargain at the Meenar Bar and Stuck-up People Cavalcade. You see, it was 10:00 PM Belgian Congo time and I should have been starting my second set. A fleeting moment of remembered adolescent post traumatic panic washed over me as I rose to my naked feet (I sleep sockless) and rushed to my neatly folded clothing. Now I had the dreaded down time of "what to wear". Stripes or Madras plaid? Stripes would have to do, since it was on top. Now for shoes! Boots or fuzzy slippers? Boots! Now for outer wear, where oh where is that old ACID WASHED Levi jacket? (only kidding, I was never an owner) Besides, it IS summer time in the East Bay, no need for outer wear! The aforementioned AskMePenny had urged me to hurry because it was filling up with a late night crowd. Anybody who knows anything knows that the Danville crowd is the most snooty, unappreciative group of people, besides the Hamptons, around these parts. And hardest to please! (what, there's someone playing music? I was too busy preening!) or (perhaps it's the music I play, which their grandparents are inclined to remember...) Having said that, I was quick to kick it into high gear since it is much better to be ignored by a bigger crowd then, conversely speaking, a smaller crowd. But... Meenar was a ghost town when I arrived so I was just ignored by a small few, with the exception of the bar staff. AskMePenny had used a ruse to get me to out of the house and, as she said, "be a trooper!" Alas, she did make up for it by singing a few songs in her very nice AskMePenny voice. So there it is! Music and Financial Independence What exactly does this mean, Music and Financial Independence? I just so happen to be giving lectures on the very subject at hand. If you want to become financially independent, own all the latest reality evading gadgets, impress your family and friends with your conspicuous consumption, lease a Hummer, then come to one of my gigs and watch, listen and learn. First clue on how to achieve the above is to do exactly the OPPOSITE of what I'm doing...Yes, it's that simple! There's more but you'll have to send away for the video. Now to the musical part of the email. I'm playing a MEAT MARKET this Thursday. Seriously, it's literally a meat market that sells...meat. Where to find Dan... First of all, I feel badly about what happened last Friday. As I had mentioned in last weeks missive, (see http://www.intelligentvapor.com/gigs.html) I thought it would be a good idea for you to pretend to know the band and make points with your date and/or friends last Friday with LUMBERYARD at Meenar. Well, sad to say, it back fired on me because 379 people were in line to have me slap them on the back or shake hands like they were old, dear friends. So imagine my embarrassment when I could not actually greet everybody and then the remainder of the aforementioned 379 rushed the stage vying for my attention. I was red as a beet! So, I say right here and now, I will never make a promise I can't keep and from now on you must find your own way to score points with that special someone without any help from me, Dan Now that that is out of the way, come by TR's in Concord on Friday to see Dan + the first in my revolving door/musician plan. Since Joe is no longer part of the scene, so to speak, (you can still see him at Kinder's in Benicia once a month) I will be using various musicians of the highest order to fill the empty hole next to me. AND Timmy Phelps is the first in line. We have Ken Cooper and Tom Fleming coming up soon but you'll have to wait and see when... So, if you have friends coming in from out of town, let's say for the sake of argument, NY, then bring them out for some authentic West Coast Slow Jams, which I will be more than happy to perform... Until then, Dan Friday 6/6/04 TR's in Concord 9-12 Sunday 6/8/04 Pyramid in Walnut Creek on Locust St. 6-9 OUTSIDE! |

LUMBERYARD in a "rare" appearance! You read correctly, LUMBERYARD is back for a, dare I say it, RARE appearance. The gigs of LUMBERYARD are far and few between, so this Friday is a day to make plans to come to Meenar in DANville. Put those Memorial Day plans on hold and cancel those campsite reservations! WE have the same big names as always, TOM MILLER on bass, TOM SUCZECH on keys, ALAN THIELE on drums and JOE ASPATORE on guitar/vocals and dan on guitar and egg shakers. there will be mayhem and imbibing going on as we play the crowd favorites (like TOXIC by BS) New amps and guitars will be shown off and bragged about repeatedly. Bring your favorite person and introduce them to the band which makes points for you the fan! You'll look just great in your favorite person's eyes. (plural eye) See you there and don't forget, the rest of the band and I will be sure to slap you on the back like an old, dear friend! (points!) Until then, Dan Friday MEENAR IN danVILLE 9-1 Sunday Pyramid in Walnut Creek 6-9 (one of Joe's last gigs...) |

Joe and Dan SATURDAY at Dallimonti's Joe and Dan return to the corner spot that is Dallimonti's. The corner spot refers to the corner of the room we play in, not the location of the building. We have learned one half of one new song and we will play it there. For all of you Joe Aspatore fans, Joe will be leaving the Joe and Dan Acoustic Duo. He will be settling into the married life more. This will give him unlimited time to pursue the simple pleasures of life: Pipe and slippers perhaps. We only have a few gigs left together so try and stop by to pay homage. We will be returning to the Pyramid Brewery on May 30th for what could be our last legitimate engagement together. We will do sporadic gigs, and maybe once a month at Pyramid. Who knows.... I have a list of quality musicians to TRY and fill the large shoes of Joe. There's the ubiquitous KEN COOPER, the charming and fancy fingered TOM FLEMING, the "Man of a Thousand Songs" MR. TIMMY PHELPS! (to name but a few!) I will without a doubt miss my good pal Joe on guitar! On another note, Joe will be there for our MAY 28th LUMBERYARD gig at Meenar. Don't go away for Memorial Day! Gas is too high! Stay in town and visit LUMBERYARD at Meenar in DANville! Until then, Dan Sat 5/22 Joe and Dan Acoustic Duo at Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill 9-12:30 Sun 5/23 NO PYRAMID gig! |

Ken Cooper has agreed to, not one, but two musical engagements this weekend. The first is the MUCH COVETED 10-11:30 AM slot at the "Art on the Main" in the heart of suburbia, Walnut Creek! This is the time when the booths are being set up and electrical extension cords are being run. We play our tunes to a somewhat "captive" audience. It warms my heart (and possibly Ken's) to be thought of so highly as to be the opening "act" for the day. So if you were to arrive at the "Art on the Main" at the time a normal person would...you'll miss us! But there is a back-up contingency plan! The very same night you can catch Ken and Dan at the Pyramid Brewery on Locust St from 6-9 PM. We play outside for maximum effect... Hopefully we'll see you there. Until then, Dan Sunday 5/16/04 "Art on the Main" 10-11:30 Pyramid Brewery 6-9 |

This may be your last time to see LIVE MUSIC at Black Diamond since they have replace all live music on Thursdays with the devils own, a DJ! Yes, the rumors were true, some guy with a shaved head, droopy pants and possibly a goatee will be spinnin' platters for the youth of today. I suppose one cannot stop progress, so look to see yours truly with a DJ coffin, shaved pate and "bad boy" facial hair in the very near future. In closing, please come out and support LUMBERYARD so as to make a strong case for live music in the future at Black Diamond. LUMBERYARD is Tom Miller = Bass Tom Suczek = Keys Alan Thiele = Drums Joe Aspatore = Guitar/Vocals Dan DeShara = Castanets/Shaker Egg Thursday 4/22/04 BLACK DIAMOND BREWERY in Walnut Creek 8-10 |

Saturday is the night and TR's is the place where Joe and Dan will lay down those soft, jazzy sounds. Also, weather permitting, you can find these erstwhile compatriots outside under the space heaters on Sunday from 6-9 at Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek. Fri Dan on bass with Gary King at some bar on Bethel Island 9:30 - 12:30 Sat TR's in Concord (next to Brenden Theatres) 8-11 Sun Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek 6-9 Locust St |

I'm in a hurry this morning, so no lumbering, loquacious missives. Starting this Sunday Joe and Dan will bring their acoustic sensibilities to the Pyramid Brewery in lovely whitebread Walnut Creek. We'll be outside under the stars and space heaters next to the outside bar, which will provide your favorite libation. Get your thirst up by walking the famous Walnut Creek Promenade and then have a sit, drink a drink and then listen to Joe and Dan. Until then, Dan PS Dan will be sitting in again with AKA SAT in DANville at Meenars 11:00 pm Sundays in April Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek 6-9:30 |

Music for the Wild/Tame at Heart Dan (always in the third person) is back at his favorite venue (sarcasm intended) MEENAR! Where he's treated like a King and people turn, stare and pay attention. Oh, what a charmed life Dan leads... On another note (pun intended) Joe and Dan, the acoustically musical entity that is them, will raise the roof and bring the house down, (incredibly funny play on words intended) this Saturday at ??? Yes, TR's in lovely Concord! Remember when you could buy a house in Concord for under 400k? Well, it's the destination spot for all America and you get in free with any display of Raiders membership. (Concord that is) See you all soon, Dan Wed Meenar in DANville (ha ha ha, get it? DAN-ville) 9-12 Sat TR's in Concord 8-10:30 |

Joe and Dan play Walnut Creek (also Sat with Famous Trio) Even with our superstar lineup, we were admonished for our supposedly egregious volume levels at Dallimonti's last Saturday! On Valentines Day no less! Lumberyard will not stand for such shenanigans...! Even with the slap on the wrist, it was a fine sounding band and there were many sublime moments for yours truly. When Joe and I play Black Diamond Brewery on Thursday perhaps there will be some fireworks and a marching band. Of course, I can't guarantee these typically American displays of bravado but I will do my best to have something close to it. (fireworks, marching band etc.) So come on by and see and be seen... Until then, Dan Thursday Joe and Dan Acoustic Black Diamond Brewery in Walnut Creek 8-10 Saturday The Famous Trio at Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill 9-1 PS When I asked four year old Maeve if she was surprised to get a Valentine from "Uncle Dan" she said: "Yes, I was surprised there was no candy!" (true story) |
|
Spend Valentine's Day w/ LUMBERYARD at Dallimonti's This should be interesting in a few different ways. Can a group of five musicians, who have never played together before, avoid the musical trainwreck? To walk this tightrope is always fun for the audience to observe and if fitting; ridicule! This version has, of course, the core of Lumberyard: Dan and Hanndsome Joe on guitars and vocals with Tom "Tommy" Miller on bass. We'll be trying to make drummer Mark Munuez (sic), look like he's having fun up there but it will be a battle of wills. Tom "Tom" Suczech will be tinkling the keys and whatever comes within reach. SO! Bring out your honey OR search for one there because Dallimont's is the place to be on Valentine's Day! Until then, Dan Sat Feb 14 LUMBERYARD at Dallimonti's 9-1 |
|
SAT! Joe and Dan at Dallimonti's Joe and Dan bring their unique brand of high velocity acoustic music to the strip known as "Oak Park Strip". If you have and appetite for beef and beef by products perhaps that Barbee-Q place on the corner will elate your discriminating palette. Or if pizza is your bag, how about Round Hill? Can't you just taste it? Then again, if your visual needs have not been met, Einstein Video had those "Victor Mature Meets the Mummy" DVDs last time I checked. After all is said and done, come by and see/hear/feel Joe and Dan... Until then, Dan PS Drats! Clive's in Germany! Sat 2/7/04 Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill Don't forget Valentines Day at the same place with LUMBERYARD Bring em if you've got em (a sweetie that is) |

THURSDAY, Dan joins AKA at Black Diamond Brewery If you seek Dan you will find him. Try about 8 o'clock or so at Walnut Creek's finest eatery/libation portal. Dan will try and keep up with guitarist/cruise director Ken C. and drummer to the stars Steve C. Will and more importantly can Dan keep up with the unfamiliar song load? Bet's will be wagered. Until then, Dan (in the first person singular) |

SAT = THE FAMOUS TRIO The Famous Trio are back in ACTION! After an impromptu Buzztones reunion of sorts at MIKE GREEN'S fabulously swanky affair last SUNDAY, TFT is ready to ease on into a night of low lights and loud muzak. Ken Cooper, fresh off a cruise ship, will bring along tall tales of the open seas. Alan "Big Deal" Thiele had many thoughts and concerns about the current administration. Hear these and other topical thoughts (Ken's are more tropical) during the break(s). I have my own wickedly wonderful expose on the goings on behind the Will Durst Kiss Off of 2003. Like: Do Will and Debbie kiss backstage? Does Steve Kravitz really feel like a teabag? Is that Johnny Steele's real hair? What about Michael's refusal to wear anything but black onstage? Just asketh of me and you shall be rewarded! Until then, Dan SAT 17 DALLIMONTI'S in P Hill 925-944-5224 9-1 PM Be sure to reserve a space at Dallimonti's on FEB 14! Yes, spend Valentine's Day with LUMBERYARD! |
|
Dan plays music with the "Will Durst Year-End Kiss-Off" show! The Will Durst Year-End Kiss-Off is actually a road show that gathers momentum as it bounces through various Bay Area venues on its way to the final countdown and interactive balloon drop at the Cowell. Joining Durst on his cynical journey down memory lane are his wife, Debi, and her improv partner Michael Bossier in the Deb and Mike duo. Durst considered running for governor in California’s “Total Recall” election, but Debi made him spend the filing fee on new paint for their house instead. Also along for the ride are Johnny Steele and Steven Kravitz. Steele is an acerbic Bay Area radio and TV impresario. Kravitz is a moody loner on the lam from his brilliant TV and movie career in southern California. Given how long they’ve known each other, this traveling troupe has morphed into a sort of dysfunctional family of comedians picking over the remains of each year to assemble a suitable memorial service. And the band to usher the fine, fine acts in and out is none other than... Thursday at Black Diamond w/ Joe and Dan Joe and Dan are back for mirth, merriment and moreover excruciating excitement! If you were in attendance two weeks ago, (you must have been because it was "standing room only") you may have noticed we had a bright and shiny new PA (public address) system. We thought ahead to slave two Crate 125 D (for digital) amps together and see what the results would be. Some of you thought we sounded better, other's thought we sounded the same and yet others noticed no difference at all! And some of you said: "Is there music here tonight?" WELL! Joe and Dan then held a closed board meeting and after long hours of deliberation, it was decided that the BOSE system should be reinstated, even thought the setup time is tripled. We felt we "owed it" to our fans. You deserve the best! So we hope you'll go Xmas shopping at one of the fine East Bay Contra Costa strip malls and then make your way over to Black Diamond Brewery for some post shopping cheer. Until then, Dan PS HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Thursday 12/18 BLACK DIAMOND in WALNUT CREEK 8-10 (pm, of course) PPS Dan's VHS video of his SF Fringe show "Looking, Then Pointing" makes a GREAT stocking stuffer! And only ten measly dollars! Don't forget the money back guarantee! Dan will even mail it for you to that special someone who needs a hard to find high quality Christmas gift! You can pay though Paypal.com too! ($3.50 extra for S&H) See a preview here on the internet at: www.intelligentvapor.com |

The Chock Full of Fun Week By the way, what is a chock? I think it's similar to a craw. (as in stuck) Well this week, inspite of the massive amounts of precipitation, looks to be one for Dan's record book. Not only does Dan get to finally play "The Big Room" i.e., Tiki Tom's, but he gets to play it with Tom! (as in Fleming) Then Dan's back to Benicia and maybe even Kinders for a big piece of predigested cow flesh. (or premasticated!) Then it's off to Benicia AGAIN! There must be something about this sleepy little hovel that attracts people such as Dan. What could it be? Strip malls? Overpriced coffee? Traveling over a bridge? How about just the truth! Decent, God-fearing people who aren't afraid to stand up and be counted! There, I said it! Until then, Dan Thurs 12/11 Tiki Tom's with Tom "Fingers of Flames" Fleming Fri 12/12 Wine Solutions in Benicia Sat 12/13 Benicia Park St Cafe in......Benicia |
Joe and Dan "Music for the Masses" Come on, I mean really! Who does more music per minute per capita than Joe and Dan? The answer? No one! We have, using the latest in discarded Cold War Statistical Hardware, measured every last iota every bit of information that was available through the oft misunderstood Draconian Patriot Act. And the conclusion is that Joe and Dan, to the exclusion of all other acoustic duos, play a higher quantity of music than all other duos combined! (Quality is all together a different matter) So come on by the Black Diamond this Thursday and do your own unbiased analysis. Until then, Dan Thur 12/5 Black Diamond Brewery in Walnut Creek 8-10 (pm) PS Look for Dan playing guitar whilst ushering in acts at the wild and wonderful: Big Fat Year End Kiss Off With Will Durst Fri 26 Amador Theater, Pleasanton Sat 27 Dean Lescher Center, Walnut Creek Sun 28 Julia Morgan Theater, Berkeley Mon 29 Little Fox Theater, Redwood City Tue 30 Majestic Theater, Petaluma Wed 31 Cowell Theater at Fort Mason, San Francisco (Dan will also be trying to dump all those VHS copies of his Fringe Festival show for a measly $10.00 each! Joe and Dan BLACK DIAMOND BREWERY Thursday! Joe and his erstwhile friend Dan will be bringing in the wooden boxes with strings attached to them and try to placate the masticating masses this Thursday at Black Diamond. We've been having a slew of surprise guests lately so who knows what the wind will blow in. By the way, in regards to my missing DVDs, only Gladiator had shown up! So, fess up and return to Dan, the rightful owner, his missing DVDs! Thurs Dan and Joe at BDB (see above) in Walnut Creek 8-10 |
|
Thursday w/Joe and Dan - PLUS: Who has my DVDs? This Thursday marks the triumphant return of Joe and Dan to Walnut Creek's Black Diamond Brewery. Not only do they, (not Joe and Dan) serve great food and drink with an affable attitude, you will also find a hint of forthcoming Holiday cheer enveloping and permeating the structure itself. Are these my own personal, jaded "projections" that I'm relying on? Or rather a cool, calm evergreen aura does indeed surround this meeting place of serious imbibement. Now for the serious diatribe! It has come to my attention that certain individuals have not or will not return the DVD's that Dan has "graciously" lent them to peruse. This goes against all reasonable matters of social etiquette muchless the sheer rudeness of it all. The DVD's in question are: Spartacus (the one with Kirk (Douglas, not Captain) Glen Garry Glen Ross (sic) (with Albert Pacino) Gladiator (with that Aussie guy) Fargo (with that Buscemi guy) Paths of Glory (Kirk again) There may be more, so search your DVD stash and your conscience and fess up! Return these to their (sic) rightful owner forthwith! Until then, Dan Thursday 11/13 Joe and Dan at Black Diamond in WC 8-10 Saturday 11/15 The Famous Trio at Dallimonti's in P-Hill 9-1 |

Sunday at MEENARS (plus Lumberyard pics) Dan is back at the brick building where loving, caring relationships spring forth. Meenar! in Danville of course... This Sunday Dan will be performing his heart on out the six steel string guitar. It is something to behold. Come by and sit in. Sing a little..all are welcome! (Next Thursday Joe and Dan at Black Diamond in WC) Until then, Dan |

Sat with LUMBERYARD - Dallimonti's Friday - Wine Solutions /w Joe LUMBERYARD, Dan's long awaited project band finally sees the light of day this Saturday night at Dallimonti's. Gathering friendly musicians from all over the globe for a one time gig, (read engagement) and then garnering a set list of non-rehearsed songs could lead to chordal trainwrecks onstage. And that's what makes it so, how can I deftly put it?, so....unpredictable and exciting. We're flying in bass player Tom "Tommy" Miller from the North Bay. He plays, and/or has played with The Alameda All-Stars and Greg Allman. We're busing in Donn "Lothario" Spindt from The Rubinoos to play the tubs and sing basso profundo. Tom "Married Guy" Fleming will have his wife drop him off in the wood-grain-station-wagon and bring along in his most vintage of vintage gear to play complex and melodious to a fault guitar passages throughout the procedings. Of course let's not forget Joe "Rockin" Aspatore, who arrives on a moped in stunning outerwear! Along with fine, fine vocal treatments you'll find passionate, fiery guitar licks of molten hot lava spewing off his frettboard! Wear non-flammable clothing if you want to stand close! (i.e. no polyester!) That leaves me, Dan "Chop Shop" DeShara. What else can be said that hasn't already been said? I'll get there using discarded bus transfers and my street-wise-know-how. Sure, I'll sing, if they let me, and maybe perform, if asked, my patent applied for infamous six-minute-one-note, (probably a 6th) guitar extravaganza/solo. Baby's will cry, parents will turn away, women with bolt-ons and dowager nails will mumble "whatever." Think if I play two notes! All this and more this Saturday at Dallimonti's! Before I forget: The informal Buzztone Reunion last Saturday was a total BLAST! It may happen again so I'll try to give more than a few hours notice. Dave "Davo" Martin was in top form on his Les Paul Custom. Ken "Honest Abe" Cooper never played better and Al "Big Deal" Thiele kept a might, clockwork like rhythm going all night long! Not one rehearsal! HALLOWEEN NIGHT: Joe and Dan can be found as "Dracula and Wolfman" "Together Again for the First Time!" this Friday at Wine Solutions in Benicia. Until then, Dan Fri 10/31 Wine Solutions in Benicia 8-10ish Sat 11/1 Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill w/ LUMBERYARD 9:30-1:00 |

Sat with The Famous Trio! If this Saturday proves to be not unlike the last time we played at Dallimonti's, then the roof will be raised, as the kids say. Ken will be resplendent in charcoal gray, leisure suit of course, while Alan will appear supine on his sparkle drums - dressed in tasteful ermine. I'll be sporting the latest in space age plastic-wear as I wander to and fro in highly flammable, reflective outerwear. (no matches please!) So put the kids to bed and leave your Zimmer Frames at home! The Famous Trio is in town for your listening and dancing pleasure. (note: freakin' on the dance floor is unacceptable!) Sat 10/25 Dallimonti's w/ The Famous Trio Please note: Lumberyard w/ Joe Aspatore-Dan DeShara-Tom Fleming-Tom Miller-Donn Spindt will be making it's first appearance EVER Nov 1 at Dallimonti's. Don't forget to remember! |

Tonight - TUESDAY - Joe and Dan Acoustic Duo I know, I really do, that "acoustic
duo" is so, well, lame for a descriptive phrase to describe what Joe and
Dan do, but it is, in all it's lameness, very PC. And right to the point. So
perhaps you can find it in your heart to visit us tonight, Tuesday, for music
and beer (or wine, and/or mineral spirits). There's also great pizza and other
eating delights. Note: Joe will be wearing his new facial hair and Dan will be
as clean shaven as he possibly can be. (shaving minutes beforehand in the limo!)
Plus there's always the Bose sound system to sit back and listen to. Although
these are not the Art Deco masterpieces that Ken Cooper sports, they do the job
just fine...ALSO: Make plans now the spend HALLOWEEN with Joe and Dan in Benicia
at Wine Solutions! Until then, Dan Tuesday

Music to soothe the savage Beastie
Boys:
I'm not sure but this Thursday
may be the last Farmers Market to play and sing for the
hustling hordes of fresh fruit shoppers. I could be wrong...I get ton's of email
requesting more information about me, Dan. "What makes you
tick?" "What's your favorite drink?" (rootbeer) "Are you gay or
what?" (no, for the godzillioneth time, I dig chicks) "Who do you think will
win best new album, Brittany, Ashley, Courtney or Tiffany?"
(sic) (Mariah!) Well, the answers to all these questions and more are
right here at your finger tips: www.intelligentvapor.com So cool it emailers, you're
totally buggin'... Also readers! This is a
special note! Joe and I will be rockin' the town this Saturday at none other
that Dallimonti's! It's the sublime place to be with your dinner date.
Are you in an existential mood? Well this is the venue for just that sort
of mind set. Can I expect you there? Excellent, I knew I could
count on you... Until then, Dan Thursday

Again, a busy week for Dan. My gig, i.e. "engagement"' last
week
at La Barca was an experiment in patience. The overall
mood emanating from the young crowd of "too cool to acknowledge
the musician" patrons towards me was as follows: "WHY are
you playing
music, which is the likes I have never ever heard of, which
is interrupting my plans to perform the mating ritual with another
narcissistic young, fresh, wrinkle free person such as myself? I
detest you old dude! "Well, at least that was my take
on it. We're in trouble if these kids
procreate... Then
there was the return of Joe Aspatore to the world of live music
after his recent scooter/broken bones mishap. His playing and
singing more than made up for the above mentioned experience. And
even though I played my songs too fast for Ken Cooper's liking at
the Walnut Festival, it was a raging success even though the sound man
was insulted by yours truly. (he did not take to kindly to my very "sound"
suggestions, which, by the way, I'd be happy to explain to anybody
who is the least bit interested) So
here's my list of business: Tues 9/23 Meenar in Danville 9-1 Thur
9/25 Wine Solutions in Benicia 5:30-8:30 Fri
9/26 Meenar with The Famous Trio 9-1 Sat
9/27 Justin Herman Plaza in SF with Krickie 5-6 Dallimonti's with The Famous Trio 9-1 Can
you make the scene? Until then, Dan |

Gigs, gigs and more gigs Where is the word
"gig" from? Is it short for "engagement" or is it slang not unlike
"booty call"? Readers can voice their opinion(s) by selecting
"reply". Now, on to the gigs! This week is fairly small in
the sense of gigatude. Joe and I will rock it this
Saturday at the World Famous Dallimonti's in Pleasant
Hill. 9-1(pm) Then on Sunday I'll be rockin it again with the inimitable
Ken Cooper at the Walnut Festival at 11:00 (am) on Sunday. Next week it's Tues/Meenar
and Thurs/Wine Solutions and Frid/Meenar and
Sat/Dallimonti's! But this will all be reiterated to you in next weeks
missive. Until then, Dan PS Don't forget to remember: Dan's video of his Fringe Festival one-man-show is now on sale for a measly $10.00.See preview at www.intelligentvapor.com/looking.wmv Support the arts for Christ's sake! |

SATURDAY @ La Barca in SF for Dan...
Last minute gig offered at La
Barca in SF. Last weeks debacle at Fiddlers Green, you know
-you get there and someone else is been booked and so you leave
and try to find other things to do in the CITY by the BAY. Oh
and another thing, no compensation from any of the involved
parties for turning down a last-minute-for-sure-gig at Wine Solutions
and then driving to the city by the bay for a big fat NOTHING. (add
on gas and bridge toll) So, I'm in the hole! AND I forgot my mic
stand at Fiddlers Green. You see, I had already loaded in, went
and got a slice of pizza only to come back and find my equipment
packed outside the door, minus mic stand and some other guy
loaded in. Classy people... usurped I was! So I get to play La Barca's
this Sat! It's on Lombard at Fillmore and there's loads of hot
looking people there to look at. Tell your friends! Oh, one more thing, the
video of my show from the 2002 Fringe Festival is currently on sale for a
measly 10.00 with a money back guarantee. It will make a great
stocking stuffer the Holiday Season. So don't forget to remember.. Until then, Dan |

Wine Solutions is back on! As you may or may not have
heard, the Wine Solutions' gig was called into jeopardy
some time last week. But, as fate would have it, or better yet
as fate would smile upon us, the gig in question has been
reinstated. So, if you come by tomorrow, there will be I,
Dan, sitting and playing music as only I know how. And what
about Friday? you say. The GREAT Timmy Phelps, who
has thrown so many gigs at my feet without any
compensation, had now given the Crown Jewel of gigs to me,
Dan. "Fiddlers Green" in sunny San Francisco! I'll be
competing with the disco upstairs from 9-1. So show a little
support and come see you know who. Until then, Dan Thursday 9/4 Wine Solutions

Thursday 8/28 Music with Dan + Joe + Bill Spooner Since Joe is still in the
recuperating mode, Bill, of Bill Spooner fame, will play guitar, sing songs and
otherwise fill in for Joe. But wait! Does this mean Joe will not be there? Au
contraire! (sic) Joe will stop by and sing some songs and make his presence known.
So come on by and have some fun eating the good chow that Black Diamond
Brewery serves up and drink the good drinks they also have waiting for
your discerning palette. Until then, Dan Thu 8/28 Black Diamond Brewery in Walnut Creek 8-10 (pm) |

Friday night special, Sat night especially special Lot's of news as of
late. If you have been up on current events, you'll
have heard that a certain Joe Aspatore has fallen off his skate
board and scraped himself up a bit. Nothing too bad, just
a broken collar bone, cracked ribs, and other unpleasantries. You
can wish him a speedy recovery at jaspatore@aol.com.He
has big shoes to fill as far as finding a replacement guitar player/singer/charismatic
entity. So I went straight to the toppermost
of the popper most and procured the talents of none other than
Bill Spooner to fill in this Friday at Wine Solutions. You read correctly,
that's THE Bill Spooner: ex-Tubes singer-songwriter. I'm
have talked him into coming down to my level and have secured a
spoken promise form him to not play too many fancy guitar chords, as
to make Dan, the four chord wonder, look bad. We'll see if there's litigation
in our future. So come on down, make the seen, and get your picture
taken with Bill... Then
Saturday will be a reunion of sorts at a mid-day party for Stacey. (sic) (sorry,
it's private) Tom "Fingers of Flame" Fleming will fill in for
Joe at the above
mentioned affair. Have seen not hide nor hair of Tom F since the last century.
What has he been up to besides raising his kids? I'll let you know... Now
it's time for Saturday NIGHT! The Famous Trio returns to Dallimonti's! See
Ken play! (talk about fingers of flame!) Will Alan be playing yet another new
drum kit? That is to be seen...I'll be just boring ol' Dan trying to keep up with
the prodigious talents of all the above mentioned people(s). Until
then, Dan Friday

decided not to see Joe and Dan tear into song after song at
BLACK DIAMOND BREWERY! First of all, it's the place
to be on Thursdays in the East Bay (as if you didn't know) plus
the food is as good as the beer on tap. I favor the
masculine Porter as Joe goes for the wimpy Amber.
Opposites attract... So come on down and see if Joe and Dan
"accidentally" wear matching culottes. (sic) Until then, Dan BLACK DIAMOND BREWERY in Walnut Creek 8-10 (pm) |

Joe A asks: "how will you sit in
with the band if you are playing 9-12???????" Well, the answer is that Dan
finally made a mistake and he is paying for it big time. I'll
be hanging out/sitting in with Dr's Orders on Friday night in Martinez
at Ferry St Station. 10:30 ish And it's "you're"
not "your". Until then, Dan |

Hey music lovers, Dan is rockin' out to the mellow side of
things this Wednesday at
Meenar. Lots of Danville chicks for the discerning male eye and plenty of Danville dudes for the uninitiated female.
Come early for the salad
bar and eggs caliente! Until then, Dan Wed MEENAR in Danville 9-12 If your out in Martinez near Ferry Street Station, you may see Dan sitting in with the band, "Dr's Orders" (about 10:30 ish) |

Sat with K. Cooper and Sun with Rockin' Joe Aspatore |

Tues/Meenar - Thur/New Georges- Sat/Wine Solutions I'll be by myself at Meenar. To fill a large, empty room is the reason they hire me in the first place. And if all goes as usual, the appreciative (sic) youngsters of Danville will be there cheering me on. Thursday will be in San Rafael with rockin' Joe Aspatore. This time, he assures me, the new Martin guitar will make it's infamous debut! And Saturday again(!) with Joe at Wine Solutions in Benicia! Until them (sic), Dan Tues 9-12 Meenar in Danville Thur 6-9 New Georges in San Rafael Sat 6-9 Wine Solutions in Benicia |

Sunday in San Francisco (music!) First
it was San Rafael at New George's.
Now it Dirty Nelly's in San Francisco! Where do these names come from? Why
do I gravitate towards them??? Dirty Nelly's is on Irving and 27th
Ave. I'll be working my kiester off from 7-11(pm) Maybe C. King will come
by, have a drink, and not say hello, again...Perhaps since Marty, Gillian,
and Debbie W's entourage et al, all live in SF, they will come by, have a
drink and say hello... |

Joe and Dan at Dallimonti's SATURDAY Joe and Dan will making the most ethereal sound(s) imaginable this Saturday. Why? Because Joe bought a new guitar. Spend Sat night with THE FAMOUS TRIO at Dallimonti's To all of you, The Famous Trio, Ken+Dan+Alan, are back in action. After spending 5 plus hours in front of a 32" Sony monitor observing the new Led Zeppelin DVD, we have collectively decided not to include any of the aforementioned group's songs in our playlist Sat night. The decided factor was which one of the Famous Trio was held in high enough esteem to sing "push, push" from "The Song Remains the Same." Because of my own low self esteem I was immediately disqualified. Ken and Alan had to both be sedated so as to not cause personal injuries to themselves and/or others. And so, (sigh) there will be no Led Zepp songs Sat night! Until then, Dan Sat 31 Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill 9-1 PM |

The bright and shiny new song list includes many lite-jazz favorites along with ultra-mellow soft-rock nuggets. Do yourself a favor and come to Wine Solutions for a buttery Chardonnay with a Barry Manilow aperitif... Until then, Dan Wine Solutions in Benicia 7-10 |

Big week for DAN! Details inside... <<Dan plays SF>> Hey you, (what girls say when they still can't recall your name for the fifth time in a row) Once in a blue moon Dan's plate become full with musical bon-bons. Like this week for instance: I'm still basking in the post birthday after-glow. The BEATLES on DVD was the highlight although the automatic kick-start for my propone torch comes in a close second. And what about that DVD burner which burns TV programs and video taped but NOT other DVDs. Shocked, I'm shocked! But since I have so many BETA tapes to transfer to DVD, I've decided to keep it and spend my free time burnin'. Here's the rest of the schedule: Tues Meenar in Danville 9-12 Wed Black Diamond in Walnut Creek w/ Joe Aspatore 8-10 Thur Wine Solutions in Benicia FARMERS MARKET 5:30-8:30 Fri Blue Water Fundraiser in SF 8-8:30 then off to Ferry St Station to sit in with Doctors Orders at about 11:00 Sat Walnut Creek "Art on the Main" 10:00 to 11:00 pm Bonanza at Duncan Sweeney's in Brentwood with Ken Cooper and Karl Keeler 9-1 |
|
FRIDAY - Meenar /Ken Cooper and Karl Keeler <<MUSIC>> Not being one who is subject to self-aggrandizement, I must put this out there for the reader. It should/could/would be a blast this Friday with Guitarist Ken and Drummer Karl inside the reverberating brick walls of Meenar. This, of course, is where all the beautiful Danville/San Ramon people go to see and be seen. Lots of girly French Manicures and guys with loads of product in their carefully quaffed hair. (The women have the popular post-coital look "going on") Let's not forget the soon to be ultra-embarrassing "faded in un-natural places" jeans. Has everyone forgotten acid washed so soon? Bring your camera! (for future blackmail, of course!) Until then, Dan |
|
Thursday at Wine Solutions in Benicia - 5:30-8:30 Summer not only brings baby kittens (redundant?) but it also ushers in the Farmers Market in Benicia. Stroll around and "see or be seen." It's all there for your personal enjoyment. I'll be starting around 5:30 or so. Between sets I'll be holding an open forum on my recently acquired Godzilla 5 DVD set. (includes Mothra!) Are these tales allegorical or just a simple metaphorical treatise on the 20th Century. Find out tomorrow! Until then, Dan PS Sunday is my birthday, but I am not accepting ANY presents! So, like, don't even go to the mall and buy me the new UB40 album. Or Ben Harper either! |
|
TUESDAY! Dan is back at MEENAR in Danville. Yes, it's too good to be true: I will be there, TUESDAY, at about 9:00 pm playing the 3 or 4 songs I know. I stop at 12:00 so don't come over after that... Until then, Dan |
|
TUES Joe-n-Dan Black Diamond in Walnut Creek No one came by for tax tips last Tues but that's quite OK. Joe played a mean shot glass slide solo whilst I shoveled down a slice of ABCDelicious pizza. This week should be more of the same with the Joe and Dan ALL STARS (hopefully) coming buy. They include Trevor and Dennis Muzzy, Clive and Chloe Evans and sometimes Peter Yates (with Celestia of course). But where is harmonica great Kean Butterfield? We need him to liven things up! After you take your taxes by the POST OFFICE come on over for a relaxing brew accented with soothing music. Plus we'll have tips on how to lower next year's returns. See you all there... Until then, Dan |
|
SAT The Famous Trio @ Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill Come by and see Ken's new guitar pick. (Shaped like a pasta shell of sorts) Al Thiele on the tubs and, of course, Dan on the 88's. Until then... Dallimonti's 9-1 925/944-5224 |

Dan DeShara of Joe & Dan fame... made a rather spontaneous purchase of an Epiphone 12 string guitar and then suddenly announced he was leaving for Las Vegas to pick up a Ford Falcon.... Hmmmmmm.....?????? Dan will return this week to join me at the Black Diamond Brewery in Walnut Creek on Parkside and Main St, from 8-10pm Wednesday March 19th. Will it be the same Dan? has he taken on some new persona? has he had some secret surgery in a rural Las Vegas plastic surgery clinic? Maybe HAIR extensions?! Don't miss the return of Dan in what is sure to be a frenzied media event. Signed. Joe A. |
|
Joe and Dan play... Back from a holiday hiatus of yard work
and house cleaning its time to get back to the real fun! Joe and Dan
will be returning to the Walnut Creek music scene for their 23rd
successive year, woahhhhhhhh....... It's a lot of work to keep looking
as good as Siegfried and Roy.. |
|
Dan is back at wine solutions this sat 7-10 pm here's how it came to be: my pal joe aspatore pulled out of this Saturday's 7-10 o'clock gig because of an aggressive hangnail. and so, i need Christmas money to mail a card to my niece(s). if you are in the vicinity, come on by and see my new handlebar mustache, it's very blink 182. also note, my new korn acoustic set is raising eyebrows... until then, dan WINE SOLUTIONS in BENICIA SAT 7-10 PM favorite email address in my book: itwasahumanhead@hotmail.com |

Sat with LUMBERYARD - Dallimonti's Friday - Wine Solutions /w Joe LUMBERYARD, Dan's long awaited project band finally sees the light of day this Saturday night at Dallimonti's. Gathering friendly musicians from all over the globe for a one time gig, (read engagement) and then garnering a set list of non-rehearsed songs could lead to chordal train-wrecks onstage. Tom "Married Guy" Fleming will have his wife drop him off in the wood-grain-station-wagon and bring along in his most vintage of vintage gear to play complex and melodious to a fault guitar passages to the proceedings. Sure, I'll sing, if they let me, and maybe perform, if asked, my "patent applied" for infamous six-minute-one-note, (probably a 6th) guitar extravaganza. Dave "Davo" Martin was in top form on his Negra Les Paul Custom. Ken "Honest Abe" Cooper never played better and Al "Big Deal" Thiele kept a mighty, clockwork like rhythm going all night long! And not one rehearsal! HALLOWEEN NIGHT: Joe and Dan can be found as "Dracula and Wolfman" "Together Again for the First Time!" this Friday at Wine Solutions in Benicia. Until then, Dan Fri 10/31 Wine Solutions in Benicia 8-10ish Sat 11/1 Dallimonti's in Pleasant Hill w/ LUMBERYARD 9:30-1:00 www.intelligentvapor.com DSLT |
